Hi...has anyone had good luck with chemo for recurrent clear cell? Seems some are on Doxil and others avastin and something else. Can you please let me know which drugs, how the choice was made and how it is going for you?
Thanks so much, Kim

Hi,

As you know I am on Doxil but not remission. Well it appears that there is not just one treatment option. When it recurred I had already arraged for a 2nd opinion in the UK (I live in Greece at the Royal Marsden with a professor recommended by my doctror in Greece (Who was at MD Anderson before). So I asked what he would have done and he said Gemzar with Cisplatin. Then he changed his mind and when he wrote to the UK doctor he proposed Gemzar with Doxil. The UK doctor proposed Doxil - high dose. In the end my doctor decided to go along with Doxil high dose. However with similar cases as mine I have also seen people on clinical trials (from this site) and there it seems to be Doxil + at least one more agent (Avastin, Torisel, EC 135). So I asked my doctor here and he frankly said "when we know what to do we all do the same, when we do not this is the result". So at this point of time you really need to talk all options with your doctor. My doctor here had suggested a clinical trial - none that was suitable for my case was availlable in Greece (they had just started one with Torisel but as a maintenance - for people in remission), but in the UK even though I was willing to relocate they did not think it was the right point to consider a trial. Had I visited the US they would have probably suggested one. (Our national health system pays for the cost if the doctor recommends it and s/he backs it up with information that shows that the person can be better treated in..... normally an EU country, but if the treatment is not availlable in the EU then USA). So I would say that you need to talk your options with the doctor and consider a 2nd opinion in one of the specialised hospitals if you are not already using one of them.

A friend on this site has a friend with clear cell who did Doxil and is in remission. So yes it can put you in remission. Both the UK and Greek doctor say the same. But it does not work for all and does not put everybody in remission.

All the best
