More on Disability Benefits

I just heard from the adjudicator assigned to my case. I applied for disability benefits just a little over a week ago. She said that it's very, very difficult in Georgia to get approved. I told her I knew of people getting approval in other states. But she's already heard from 2 of my doctors and received results of two of my most recent CT scans so she said she might go ahead and have their doctor look at my case.
I think it's strange that it can be so different from state to state. And I wonder if those of you approved can tell me what state you are in.
Thanks!

I am from Texas and had no problem really , this was even before ovarian cancer put on the list.
I find it very confusing about it being different state to state. I don't think SS has anything to do with the state. Now medicad maybe .

You make a good point about how SS should not be different, state by state. However, it somehow does goes through a state office. I even received additional forms to complete, from the Georgia Dept. of Labor.
It shouldn't be so subjective.

I think your adjudicator is full of you-know-what. SS is Federal. The man I spoke with at our local office (I live in Georgia) said there was no doubt I would qualify medically. It's the work credits I am lacking. The patient advocate who mentioned it to me knew of a patient who was approved within a month.

Is it possible this adjudicator is not aware of the new compassionate allowances list? I wouldn't take no for an answer. If you have the work credits it should be a no-brainer. (Hmm...come to think of it...maybe that's her problem).

I received state disablility from California (the state) for one year, and I was also approved to receive Social Security. I am now back to work full-time.

I am in Florida. Ovarian cancer is included in the 50 on that list. This should be in all states. I would look into it.

Jan, I think they don't know what they're doing in that office. I'm in South Carolina and you know my story :)

Either way, no matter if it takes more than a month, you'll be reimbursed to a year prior to your application like I was.

I'll be praying about this! God bless!

Thanks for all the encouragement.
I did mention the Compassionate Allowance to her and she said something about it being a new unit in her office, but she was assigned my case. I don't know if it's because they don't know what they're doing or because I haven't had mestasis outside the peritoneal area (although when I was diagnosed, it did impact 4 of 7 lympth nodes in that area), or becauase I haven't had a reoccurrence. I try not to worry, but it is hard to sleep at night (even with a sleeping pill) because I am anxious about this. Just something else I need!
I appreciate all for responding!

Good luck with this "worker" and keep us posted. I would think this would not be subjective. I've just applied in Michigan and after talking with an attorney, he said he'd just pass along my case, have SS call me that afternoon (which they did). We spoke for more than an hour and I have faith that this will come through...especially after hearing from our friend Abbachild.

Be sure to keep up with us as the info here is really useful.

Hugs, Kathleen

I just received another call from my SS adjudicator. She says if I haven't already filled out the forms I received from the Ga Dept. of Labor, not to bother; they're probably not needed. She told me that it looks really good for me to get approval, partly because part of my colon had had to be removed during my debulking. She told me to call her in a week.
I also learned that Georgia is the only state where the Federal employees and disability program, come under the state's auspicies. And only Mississippi has more denials for benefits than Georgia. She has actually worked at this job in another state so she really seems to know what she's doing. And she's fighting for me, it seems. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Artemis did you by chance use the ticket to work program . I would love to try and go back to work but I am flat terrified of losing my benefits including medicare . If I should have to quit working again . The stuff I have on the program is as clear as mud and the web info is no help.

See that? Prayers work :) And that was fast!!!

I live in Ky. I was diagnosed with stage 3 last April, applied for disability in June and was approved on the first application. Remember you must be off 6 months before they will pay you but you can get SSI pretty quickly if you don't have a lot of money in the bank.Good Luck

I have quiet a few of the things listed, but I still don't qualify for disability because I've never been able to work to get the work credits. The doctors declared me disabled at age 14 and I've never been able to work. Yet again....I have Ovarian Cancer, Muscular Dystrophy, Scoliosis, etc......and I don't qualify. It irritates the hell out of me because I know a few getting it and still work on the side or aren't even disabled.

Good Luck & Congrats to everyone here that can get it!

Take care & God Bless
