Man joins Army: wife has ovarian cancer

0 Recommendations

This is a good but sad story about a 39-year-old man who joined the military to get health coverage. His wife has ovarian cancer and he was laid off from his job.

OK now I can end my pity party for a while. What a remarkable family!

Yes it is a great story and I am keeping the family in my prayers as it will be difficult on all of them. I am so blessed to have my husband with me to do all the things that at times I can not do but especially just to discuss my feelings about chemo, CA125 results etc etc.
Keep up the fight gals.

What a sad story - not a good story. That people have to do this just to be able to afford treatment is beyond me. Her husband leaving her when she needs him the most. It is heart-breaking.

I am 42 years old. I have ovarian cancer. We cannot pay our bills. Our Visa is maxed out. We can't afford groceries. We are down to one car. The other sits in the driveway with a flat tire and bad transmission. My daughters are 22 and 17. My husband is in the Army. He is halfway through his second year. You are able to move with your spouse. They tell you where you can go to get treatment. So, while we are together right now, we are 8 hours away from friends and family. This isn't a perfect solution for this family. Yes, they will be able to move with him wherever he goes, unless he is deployed. Yes, she will receive "free" healthcare. No, they will not be able to pay all of their bills or have grocery money. I went to this site and they have set up a fund for them at the local bank so maybe they will be ok. One the one hand, I am thankful their story has received so much coverage which will bring financial relief to them as well as shed some awareness on ovarian cancer. On the other hand, I wish someone would do a story like this on my family so we could focus on the fight instead of how we are going to pay bills and eat. My husbands commitment to the Army will be over in 3 1/2 more years. He is considering staying in for the full 20 years because once you're out, your coverage ends and then my cancer would become a pre-existing condition so no matter what job either of us got, any future recurrances would not be covered. I wonder if anyone has informed Michelle? Maybe I need to post on their forums in case she is reading them. . .

A note in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel this morning says the story has received 1.7 million hits on the Internet. It is a four full-page, poignant story focusing on the insurance dilemma and the realities of ovarian cancer. This is the kind of light (publicity) that needs to be shed on ovarian cancer in all its nastiness and the need for insurance reform. The reporter had done a smaller story on oc a couple weeks prior to this one. Kudos to him.

I dropped him a line of appreciation. Maybe you would like to do the same.

Take care.
