LATimes runs BRCA Awareness Month article--in OVCA Awareness Month!

0 Recommendations

Though they never mention OVCA unless it's part of an obituary, it seems our ceaselessly declining local fishwrap here in LA couldn't wait to do a titillating article about National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), even while National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month (September) is still attempting to find publicity at the paper.

LATimes today: "Breast Cancer Ads Use Lechery for Good."

Right. Couldn't they at least hold off until October 1? I'm writing the editor russ.stanton@latimes.com and the writer dan.neil@latimes.com to express my displeasure with this, and I hope you will too. These people just don't have a clue. And remind them that ovarian cancer is four times more lethal than breast, and yet receives less than one tenth as much research money.

Just to let you know, yesterday the Macy's ad , several pages of it too, had all pink ribbons and pink clothes in support of breast cancer. In Walgreen's store they have, year round, pink ribbon socks displayed! Nothing anywhere in the store is there any other types of cancer signs. I see pink till I'm about to throw up. Okay, I agree I should support pink since my Mother died from breast cancer at the age of 51. But, right now I have a rare form of OV cancer. I know there will never be research for me, but it seems to me breast cancer is the ONLY cancer that gets this much attention. There are so many other cancers but with the PR going on, I'm just about to scream! Let's just be fair to ALL cancer. Oh my gosh, I just saw on TV, right now, another Ad for breast cancer. Awwwwww!!!!

It leads me to believe that OVCA patients are either being let down at the national level--or that there is no real national level to speak of.

For instance, yesterday one of my friends saw that I spoke of this at a blog. There was an OVCA awareness program at her son's school, and he was wearing a ribbon around his wrist all month. She emailed me a confirming foto. The wrist was turquoise, not teal--here in Los Angeles OVCA is represented far more by turquoise than by teal. This is true in some other fundraising communities around the USA, I've noticed.

I wouldn't begrudge a penny of research money to BRCA research. But OVCA is really failing at raising awareness at the national level, and BRCA Awareness month seems to start earlier and earlier and end later and later.
