IUD and OVCA or PPC

0 Recommendations

I was wondering if any of you used an IUD before being diagnosed with OVCA or PPC? We are looking into a possible link between IUD's and OVCA or PPC. If so, please let me know, and give any specifics such as name or hormone type. Thanks so much -- maybe together we can share information and help find what is causing this in so many women.

I used an IUD for years,,copper 7,I think. I had it for years and guess I should have been on pills as they are associated with lower risk for OVCA,all that ovulating was bad for me. I never took the pills for more than a year,,felt horrible on them. And ovulated into my fifties!

Patricia123,
Thanks so much for responding to this discussion. I will be interested to see where it leads us. We will wait and see if there are others ...

Hi...I also had an IUD...copper. I had it for about 8 -9 years. Had it removed at 40 when I had a tubaligation.
I would not be surprised if there was a link...

I used some sort of IUD for 20+ years. The first few were Progestasert T's (or something like that), and then I went to the copper kind, and I think I had two of them, the last of which was in for probably 10 years and got removed with my uterus when I had my debulking. I had never missed a period in 40 years until my hysterectomy at the age of 52, so I too ovulated a LOT. Not good, but nothing can be done about that now!

Hello,
I started my marriage with the "pill" and after my first son, I changed to an IUD. I had a number of different types as they came into favor and fell out of favor. I had a second son seven years after the first and then had my tubes tied. I was a late bloomer and and early menopause. Took HRT for about three years until that was a no..no. We were told that having children and a tubal ligation would cut your chances of having OvCa.
Well I guess not.....

I never used an IUD and was on the pill for about 5 years. Had two sons in my twenties. I was still having a regular period at age 53 when diagnosed.....started my period at 10 years old. That's many years of ovulation! I didn't realize this was one of the risk factors for ovc.

Thank all of you for joining the discussion -- and sharing whether you did or did not use an IUD. Thank you also for giving other information and details. I think it would be wonderful, as we talk and share, if we could uncover some similarities that would help us help others in the future. It is so wonderful to have this network and I appreciate all of you for taking time to share your info.

I never used an IUD. Was only on the pill for about 3 years total. I used a diaphragm for most of my childbearing years, and then had a tubal when I was 42, I think. Two kids at 30 and 32 and nursed them both for a year. Started my period at 13 and was still going at diagnosis at 52.

I used an IUD (copper 7 I think) for a short while in my 20s probably a year or two. Other than that some sort of barrier system. Probably tried the pill but never stayed on it any length of time. Thought I was doing the right thing by not putting crap in my body. Duh... Two kids and about 2 years breastfeeding. Started my periods at 12 and at 52 had my last while they wheeled me into surgery.

I used the copper 7 IUD for many years--no birth control pills ever. Gia

Birth control pills in my teens. IUD in my 20's, but for a very short time. A copper 7 I think. Don't really remember many details.
Started having periods at about age 10.

I had a dalcon shield IUD from 1972-1975 when it caused a massive infection, which recurred within a year even more seriously. This all caused scarring of both fallopian tubes and encased the uterus in scar tissue.

There is some speculation that ovarian cancer really begins in the fallopian tubes and that injury increases your chances of ovca. I developed infertility which required plastic surgery repair and treatments with medication for both my husband and myself. Miraculously, after seven years we had 4 children in the next seven years.

I feel there is a combination of reasons for any cancer and I'm certain both the infection, damage, and medications were contributing factors.

Yes I used an IUD in the late seventies, early eighties. Nnot sure what the name of it was, but if you let me know some names of those avaiable then, it might jog my memory.

You are raising a concern that I have also had.

There are some studies on this, that you probably are aware of:

One large study published in American journal of epidemiology by Shelly Tworoger and coauthors in 2007. They found a small but significant increased risk for ovarian cancer for women using IUD.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17656616?ordinalpos=14&itool=EntrezSyste m2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDo cSum

For me, I used hormone IUD (levonova) for 10 years before being diagnosed with stage 3c OC. And of course the idea of the IUD might have anything to do with my cancer has struck me.

Thus I am especially curious if there is any connection between hormone IUDs, compared with copper IUD and no IUD. Hormone IUDs are recommended as safe, but has probably not used for long enough time to measure risk of ovarian cancer yet.

Hope you go ahead with this
Best,
Inger

Hi,

I did use the IUD for about 5 years back in the late 70s and early 80s. I am not sure what it was made of.

Katie

I used the CU 7 IUD for years. and the pill for 2 years I had one child by birth and nursed for a year. good luck on your search.

I too used an IUD -- dalcon shield -- from 1971 into the 1980s.

I all so used an IUD in the 70's . Had it removed because of complications and infections.

I, too, used an IUD for many years.

I am more worried about my laptop use. First laptop in 1999 and it sat on my lap, overheated, for hours a day. With the edge right on my lower abdomen as my current laptop sits.

I wondered about that. But had forgotten the IUD till this thread.
Alot of women I knw went from the Dalcon shield to the copper 7.
