My sister just completed her first chemo cycle for stage III. Day one was IV taxol, day 2 was IP cisplatin and day 8 was IP taxol. She has some diarrhea and stomach cramps with bad gas pains too. Any suggestions?

Cancer Taxol Surgery Ativan Morphine Ovarian cancer Probiotics Pain Carboplatin Diarrhea
Do you mean cramps as in GI or intestinal cramping with the diarrhea? You might try probiotics for that. I found yogurt wasn't enough and added a chewable probiotic tablet daily. I had a really severe episode after taking a lot of antibiotics for an infection and the probiotic fixed the problem in two days. I kept taking it after that and it helps.
You can try Gas-X for the gas,
I found the first treatment was the worst for pain.
I am afraid your sister might have cramps quite a bit with this treatment, at least I did. Mine wasn't related to the intestinal tract it was just crampy from the IP treatments. I found that Ativan helped with the cramping. Good Luck

Hi, I am getting the same Taxol/Carboplatin IV/IP. FIrst off, let your Chemo nurse know and they may tell you what to do. I had a lot of gas pains for a while after surgery. The diharrea eventually stopped and then I couldn't go. If it is uncontrolled she needs to be treated, possibly IV fluids. Let the doc/chemo nurse know everything. I use Colase now 2x/day because know I have a hard time going if I don't take it. Something weird that is happening now that I am told is normal for us IV/IP patients. My abdomen is actually tender to touch. Very weird but not unknown. I figured I'd tell ya since I didn't know that was "normal".
I am getting my first taxol/chisplaton treatment today about 3 weeks after surgery. I am an emotional wreck, I am crying, at the drop of a hat, don't know if this is the right treatment for me or not , then switch back to being absolutly sure it is. I am an artist and completely freaked out by the thought that my fingers may numb up...don't have any idea if I am making the right choices in my life. I have always been a strong person and that seems to have gone right out of the window. Anyone else feeling these feelings? or am on a crazy ledge all by myself?
I have morphine drops for under my tongue when my bowel gets really bad; it takes the cramping away.
ask your dr. about probiotics and milk of magnesia..
also, when i was on that regime of chemo 3 years ago, i got so so mentally bad...they gave me oxycotin which makes you feel real good..
I also have my 215 card and that has helped me a lot also...dealing with side effects is the worst.
Hi,
I was diagnosed in 2/06 3b and tomorrow will be three years since I completed my chemo and I am still cancer free. The treatment can be tough, but I believe it was worth it. I was on the 21 day cycle and my kidneys started to shut down so my doctor decided to do the IV paxol/taxol and carboplatin for six cycles every three weeks and then he did the IP cisplatin every three weeks for six treatments. It greatly extended the length of my chemo treatment, but my body was better able to tolerate it. I did have the numbness, but it has gone away and three years later pretty much all of other side effects have disappeared. My advice is to hydrate a lot and make sure that you tell your sister tells her doctor all of her symptoms as soon as she feels them. They normally have lots of things they can do to relieve the symptoms.
Good luck to your sister.
I live in California so medicinal marijuana is legal, and cancer patients can get a 215 card and buy either bud to smoke, or brownies, or peanut butter, etc. made with marijuana at the approved dispensiary. You can also grow 2 plants for your own use.
I'm not sure what other states have the 215 card...
p.s. I lost so much weight when I was on the cisplatin IP therapy, but I didn't have the 215 card back then.
That cisplatin is such a heavy duty treatment; make sure you drink lots of fluid; my kidneys were damaged.
I'm on Doxal and that doesn't affect the kidneys at all so I'm thankful that I'm able to try and control the cancer with this treatment.
I am two weeks post-op and will be starting chemo within the next few weeks as well. In less than a month my life has changed drastically and I am also having great difficulties with emotions and feeling totally out of control. Sad to say but reading your posting made me feel like I am not all alone. My heart is with you and your not alone either. Hugs
Does anyone have suggestions for a good place to acquire wigs that are not outrageously priced?
I know my name is odd...my brothers gave it to me when i was 8.
So..I have stage IIIc ovarian cancer. It grows slow and hell to fight.
Now..of course you are scared and your mind is made up one minute and changes the next. What do you really know about cancer? It is unknown territory. You are an artist...you are confident and secure in what you know...like yellow and blue make green. It is a guarantee. Chemo is not. You have to have faith in your doctors, yourself and fight like hell
