Insurance reimbursement for travel etc to distant Cancer Centers

0 Recommendations

OVCA Sisters,
I see there are discussions among members who either plan to travel or have traveled to Cancer Centers out of their immediate residential area for either second opinions or treatment. Look into your insurance coverage for reimbursement. I have UnitedHealth Care and they reimburse travel, tolls, lodging, etc. to any of their designated Centers of Cancer Excellence if located over 50 miles from you home. They also have Oncology Nurses who stay in touch and assist you issues.

The ACS will also reimburse you up to a certain amount.

Thanks so much for this wonderful information!! I am going to MD Anderson for a second opinion and hopefully get into a clinical trial. I also have United Health Care which has been fantastic through all of this. How do I find a list of their designated Centers of Cancer Excellence and was there a certain place to look up reimbursement for travel and lodging. Thank you so much for the information and best of luck to you!!

Hi Karenluke,
We have UnitedHealth care POS. I found out about the centers when the insurance company nurse called me post op to check on me. She offered to have the oncology nurses to call me and follow me then she told me about the Centers of Excellence and looked up the Centers that I wanted to (also she did mapquest to check mileage for me). The Centers on their list located near me are Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Cancer Center at U of PA. These are both NCI designated Comprehensive cancer centers so I have feeling that is the criteria. If that is the case then I am sure MD Anderson is on their list.

The phoenix,
thanks for sharing that the ACS also reimburses. Good to know.

Just a bit of information...If you are enrolled in your employer's FSA plan, mileage and parking is a reimburseable expense. The reimbursable mileage is round trip to and from. At Jan 2009, mileage is .27 cents. Check with your plan administration for what kind of back up they need. We require a mapquest with the addresses noted, as well as proof of the appointment.

Oops, the mileage for this year only .24 cents. .27 was last year. I'm working in both years still! : )

Thanks Shamrock 2009 for getting back to me so quickly! I am going to check with UHC today to see if my plan also reimburses. I am at Moffitt in Tampa and they are incredible. My doctor, Dr Apte, did his fellowship at MD Anderson and thinks very highly of Dr. Gershenson. June 18th can't get here fast enough! Thank you so much for posting this goldmine of information. I wish you all the best!

Kareluke,
Let us know what happens on June 18th at MD Anderson. Best of Luck,
