incredible nausea

0 Recommendations

My mother is 87. Although there is no tissue diagnosis, doctors believe she has ovarian cancer. Her CA 125 jumped; plus she has lots of the typical symptoms of ovarian cancer including functional bowel blockage.

Because of other health issues, she chose hospice.

Can anyone help with the incredible nausea that she is experiencing?

we have been through almost every possible drug...now doing a compounded gel composed of Activan, Reglan, and Benadryl + Kytril. So very very sick today.....

Have they tried Zofran for the nausea? What about Compazine or Ativan or Emend (sp)?

I am so sorry. Have you tried some ginger tea? Or just nibbling on candied ginger?

How awful for your mom to have to suffer so much at this stage of her life. I really feel for her.

Have they given her Emend? I found that was the strongest anti-nausea med I've had (after Zofran and Compazine) and it worked pretty well, but I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't already tried it. I really hope she gets some relief soon.

Sending prayers and good wishes to both of you.

Kytril is a really powerful anti-nausea drug. Have they done any scans, etc., to see if there is a blockage? My sister had a blockage. Her doctor did a surgery called a J-peg, which meant she would receive very little (10% I think) nourishment. We pureed certain foods and she could drink liquids to keep her hydrated. In her case, it was an end-of-life measure, but compared with a wonderful hospice team, she survived two more months and was be at home. Her extended family and church always had someone there with her. I was able to fly up to see her most weekends.

It may be that your mom isn't strong enough for the surgery or that other health issues preclude this.

Y'all are in our pryaers.

Blessings.

Another thought if there is access to it is acupunture. One of my friends went on a cruise and was terribly nauseated. She said it was the best 150 dollars she ever spent. It is supposed to give relief to chemo induced nausea akso. I have never tried it but wanted to toss that out there.

I am in the middle of my chemo treatment of taxol and cisplantin, They have me on Sancuso patches and emend and I haven't had any nausea. The patch can last up to 7 days. I don't know if this could be an option for your mother or not but you could ask your Dr. Good Luck.

Sorry to hear that your Mom is going through such horrible problems.
Possibly an Nasogastric (NG) tube inserted through the nose would drain stomach fluids therefore relieve the nausea.
The Sancuso patch is a form of Kytril that is suppose to work well.
If the nausea is caused by pressure on the stomach by increasing ascites fluid then even on hospice care a paracentesis to relieve the fluid should be done.
Don't give up--- all comfort measures while someone is on hospice should be tried--so push the hospice care to do everything possible.

It also occurs to me that the bowel blockage could be the cause of her nausea. Have they thoroughly investigated the bowel issue? I would hate for her to give up if there is something that could be done.

thanks for all the kind words

mom became very agitated -- they gave her morphine, ativan, and hidol.

she eventually went into a coma-like state and died.

the death was peaceful for which I am grateful but an incredible loss

thank all of you
