I have been on chemotherapy for the past 2 years; most times I feel pretty good. What I try to do is live my life as normal as possible, one way is babysitting my grandchildren a few days each week. Recently I have been warned that I should not be around the children if they receive the live vaccinations such as MMR, OPI, smallpox, etc... Normally I am not inclined to pick up the common cold or viruses that are going around, even if my grandchildren catch them. Has anyone out there heard about avoiding children for a few weeks after they have been vaccinated?
Thanks,
Yolie

I keep my granddaughter too and I was warned also. She never had any during that time so that worked out good. But I always wondered about other kids. You know like when you go to the grocery or somewhere there are always little kids. I also worried about her birthday party where there were little kids, but that worked out too.

My Dr told me they were more of a danger to me as they are living petrie dishes, but he never said anything about vaccinations.
And he only told me to avoid them if they were running a fever and my count was down.I volunteer at a school in the life skills class and watch a gdaughter when her Mom travels which works out to about 3 nights a week.
Tissues and hand washing have been my only extra caution. One thing for this flu thing is it has raised awareness and that makes me look less paranoid with my washing and cautions.
You know it may be the fever thing if they run a fever with the shot it could be something else and you might then be exposed to something else.
But honestly I have never caught anything from them & I have seven gchildren and one great.God Blesskate

I haven't been warned about going around children but since my spleen was removed as part of my debulking surgery I, myself, have had almost every immunization in the book. They just gave me the shingles vaccine because of having cancer but I don't think one is supposed to get it if they are actively in chemo.
