Dear Carole,
I am twice your age(54) and was also on carbo/taxol with possibility of avastin. Also, stage IV. With my trial, I was not guaranteed of getting Avastin. I believe that I did because of some of my symptoms. Following my chemo(Aug.2008), I was free of any new cancer. I now have one bothersome lymph node which is being treated with radiation within the next week. I wish you all the best, and believe with Avastin you have a much better prognosis. Good luck kid.....Lena

I completed 6 rounds of carbo/taxol and possibly Avastin [Bevacizumab] (or a placebo) added to the regime (known as clinical trial GOG 0218) cycles 2-6. I am now receiving either Avastin [Bevacizumab] or a placebo for another cycle 7-22 (every 3 weeks). My physician and the research nurse thought I was getting the actual medication with my carbo/taxol and believe I am getting it now based on my symptoms (nosebleeds, heartburn, elevated BP, hoarseness, post nasal drip, all the time). I am also Stage IV. My CT scans have been wonderful, all the tumors (3 on my liver) have shrunk or gone away. I finished my Taxol/Carbo on Dec. 26th and will be having my first CT scan since just the Avastin or placebo in April. The Dr. told me the Avastin may not completely irradicate the tumors on my liver, but what he is hoping to see is that they are dying from the inside because of the vascular effects of the Avastin. My side effects are minor, however I know it can be a scary drug when you read all the side effects and what could be. So far, so good for me.

I have completed 2cycles of carbo/taxol and possibly Avastin [Bevacizumab] (or a placebo) added to the regime (known as clinical trial GOG 0218) cycles 2-6. When the Avastin/placebo was added a week ago I did have heartburn, slight hoarseness, post nasal drip but so far BP is normal. I am Stage IIIc.
I will get a ct scan after cycle 3 (mid April) and will be checkng my CA125 every cycle for decreases I hope.
Fingers crossed.

I also did the Taxol/Carbo and possible Avastin Trial (GOG218) - completed one month ago. I am Stage IIIC Primary Peritoneal Cancer/Epithelial Ovarian Cancer. I completed the six rounds of chemo with the same few side effects - runny nose, higher blood pressure, and the one that took me off the second leg of this trial - a blood clot in the descending Aorta! I still do not know if I received Avastin, but the doctors were not willing to take a chance on going forward. (I personally believe I did receive the Avastin, but we will have to wait and see.) Be sure that you know and understand that all chemo has side effects for most people, but for me the good out weighted the bad. The only thing I would add is that having been on this trial - I am excluded from the consolidation trial out of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center because of the possibility of having had Avastin. This is something you should know when you make your decision. Would I do it again knowing what I know - YES, I would. I hope that this helps

I am on a trial for Avastin. I received Carbo, Taxol and Avastin every week for 6 months and am now on Avastin and Taxol every 21 days for 12 cycles. I was diagnosed with IIIC in April 2008. My CA 125 went from 425 before surgery to 19 at second cycle of Avastin and has been at 8 or 9 for the last 9 cycles. My CT scans and PET scan have been clear. I hope this gives you inspiration. :)

Did you have many side effects with this combination?
Teresa

I am stage 3 and my doctor wanted me to participate in the trials saying what great results the combination has shown - I did not qualify because I will be having surgery after 4-6 cycles. He has written to my insurance company to try to get them to approve coverage because he feels so strongly in favor of it. We will see... Good luck to you!

Hi Teresalynne,
My side effects were runny and bloody nose, muscle and joint pain, neuropathy, headaches, constipation, fatigue, my hair became thin but I did not go bald. If you need remedies to any of these side effects let me know I have remedies for you. I have had 26 chemo sessions 4 to go. :)
God Bless

TY all for your answers!

Hi
My mom lost all her hair in the very first cycle of chemo itself, she probably will need another cycle now. Can you please tell me the remedy to avoid hair fall/loss? And can I share the same with the doc before taking?

I will be very grateful.

Regards,
Kapil

Dear K-rol

We`re in the same trial - I am in ICON-7 as well. I am Norwegian and 20 yrs older than you with stage 3c OC (since Dec 07).

I completed all cycles of chemo/Avastin by Jan 09 and tolerated Avastin pretty well.

Cross my fingers for you!

Hoping for good outcomes for all of you ladies! I did an earlier Phase II trial of carbo/taxol/avastin for stage IV front line treatment. Stayed on it for a year after 7 cycles of chemo. It put me into a total clinical remission for well over a year - closer to 2 yrs!
