I actually received the ssid for ovca what would be a bigger benefit would be changing the disability requirements for medicare you have to have been receiving ssid for 18 months before you qualify for medicare . My private insurance was over the ssid I received by $250. My brother thankfully picked up the difference, but I'm still in debt up to my eyeballs.
I'm in remission, and would like to go back to work ,but I'm stuck they run my credit report and I don't get a call back.
If I take a job that doesn't pay what I made or doesn't offer insurance I end up in worse trouble because I lose the medicare. Then I will get little or no care.
Have you had a recurrance? Were you approved without having one?

I did get it without recurrence . I was stage 3c and I didn't even go in for the interview we did it over the phone and of course pounds of paper work. Honestly applying early as possible is a good idea, if you can't do your job and cope with chemo then apply the day you lose the job.
I'm currently on and off with SSI because it's based on my husbands income...the little bit he gets.
I'm wondering how this would be different than what I get already.
I think I may check further into this.
Thanks for the link.
I have been on disability for about 4 yrs. This due to the severe neuropathy in my hands and feet. I have tried to work and when I cannot ss gives me the ssi in addition to the disability. Recently I had to give up my job of 11 months due to the fact that here in Florida if your gross pay is over $940 per month they considered you not disabled anymore and you lose everything including medicare. My medical expenses run over $5000 per year. It seems like a no win situation. With both I average about $650 per month with food stamps. I have a lower disability pmt. because I stayed home until my 3 children were in school and then when I raised my grandson until he went to school. I feel like I am being penalized for this. As soon as you get on your feet, they knock you down again and they wonder why people dont work. It makes more sense to go by the hours of work instead of pay. I am sure I am not the only one. Anyone else have a similar situation?
I am currently trying to get on SSDS. I received a call yesterday from one of the main offices, and they are going thru my files now. With both my husband and I having late stage cancers, me with stage IIIC OVC, and currnetly going thru chemo again, it will be a big help financially if I get on this. My husband's insurance, where I am now covered does not pay any of the office visits. And that , as you know , counts up fast. With Oncologist visits, primary visits, surgeon visits for my port, surgeon visits for my shoulder surgery etc. I am going to wait and see what God does in this situation. It is encouraging now to see Ovarian Cancer is on their list now. Thank you for that posting and for all the comments in response to the post above, It was a help to me! ((HUGS))
I looked at the link and it lists "Ovarian Cancer that is inoperable, unresectable, or with distant metastases"
So if my OVCA is stage IIIc has been resected and I am receiving chemotherapy it sounds like I am not eligible for SSD. I have been out of work since January 2009 and have LOA approved until chemo finishes in June.
Shamrock,
I think you will still qualify. Here are all the conditions listed for under the SS Blue Book, para 13.23:
E. Ovaries, as described in 1 or 2:
1. All tumors except germ-cell tumors, with at least one of the following:
a. Tumor extension beyond the pelvis; for example, tumor implants on peritoneal, omental, or bowel surfaces.
b. Metastases to or beyond the regional lymph nodes.
c. Ruptured ovarian capsule, tumor on the serosal surface of the ovary, ascites with malignant cells, or positive peritoneal washings.
d. Recurrent following initial antineoplastic therapy.
2. Germ-cell tumors--progressive or recurrent following initial antineoplastic therapy.

Hi Shearaw,
That was helpful. I have been out of work since 1/7/09 (surgery) and started Chemo 2/23/09. I will start the submission process soon.
Thanks, Shamrock
Shamrock, I'm in basically the same situation as you...successful surgery, one more chemo, everything looks good...I had assumed I would not qualify for social security but after reading the posts on this list I decided to go ahead and apply and got the letter within a couple of weeks, payments to begin in June. They ask for a lot of information but the process was pretty much painless. If you haven't started the application yet I would definitely encourage you to do it.
The hardest part is just knowing that they give us the money because they don't expect us to survive...Well my friends say "Screw 'em...take the money and LIVE!"

Hello all:
I started the SSDI process on March 4th and I'm still waiting for my answer. The waiting is hard but I pray that I receive an approval. I have heard people say they have had to go through the appeal process and it could take up to a year. Has anyone had a good result the first time around? I have stage IV ovca with three reoccurences ( just a little bit of background).
