GINGER-ovarian cancer cells die

3 Recommendations

I wanted to share this will you all. I don't think we can post web addresses here so Google 'Ginger Ovarian Cancer UK' and you will get some information on this.

When ginger is put in a petri dish the ovarian cancer cells die two ways:

" apoptosis, which is essentially cell suicide, and autophagy, a kind of self-digestion."

My (sirius)ovarian cancer has returned to the wall and floor of my pelvis after a 10 month remission. CA125 count Nov '5', Feb '220' and March '315'. I have started taking ginger capsules (from the health food store - not discount places) after eating. (We have to take stuff after eating so our stomach acid doesn't destroy the product (ginger) and eats the food first).

My pelvis felt 'tender' before I took any ginger (I only took 1 capsule twice yesterday) and today my pelvis doesn't seem so tender. I will continue to take the ginger capsules as chemo won't be for a while yet and I will let you know how it goes for me. There are no side effects to taking ginger. If you do want to get ginger make sure (it comes in capsules and liquid) it's the real stuff (health food store) and not super market garbage.

I might even increase my dosage to 2 capsules 3 times a day. Hey, I just wanted to share this with you as it is something to check into and think about...

So, I wonder about just putting fresh ginger in with my carrots, celery and apple for juicing...if it has the same effect...and how much should we consume? I have been using fresh ginger in my juice for a couple of months now....

Hi abaschild,

I don't know the optimim amounts and I am playing around with this, since there are no side effects that I know of.

Each of my capsules are 550 mg each.

Like I said, I am taking started to take 2 capsules X 550mg (= 1,100 mg) X 3 times a day = 3,300 mg a day

(These are easy to swallow as they are gel caps but there is also liquid in the health food stores).

The problem with taking them with food is that the stomach acids eat up the food and not all the nutrients we 'eat' go into our systems but are passed out instead. This is why when we take vitamines we should take them right after eating so they are not wasted being destroyed in our stomachs. The idea is to get them to the rest of the body in as much potency as possible.

So, if we take the ginger right after the stomach's acids eat up the food, then there is less to destroy the ginger.

If you are taking the ginger with the juice that would be okay, but if I were you, I would 'eat food' first and then drink the juice with the ginger in it.

Just my take on it, let me know how you do it and if you find any changes okay?

((((Hugs)))))

What about ginger tea? Should we not add chopped fresh ginger to our foods? Please clarify. Thanks

ohhhhhhhhhhhhh I like this News!!!!!!!!!!

thanks I will give this a GO

I do add ginger to my juices, and will check out my healthfood store for ginger capsules

I am all for giving this an "all guns out approach"

Hope you are well
& thanks

Forgot to mention earlier that I did the google search on "ginger ovarian cancer uk." Sounds promising. I'm all for trying something natural (along with conventional treatment).

Just wanted to add that I think similar research is also continuing in the US. In 2006 researchers at Univ. of Michigan also found that ginger applied directly to OvCa in petri dishes resulted in cell apoptosis. I believe they published a paper in the fall 0f 2007(?) identifying what they believe is the active ingredient. I would guess that the next step is to formulate a drug and test it in live animals to understand delivery mechanisms in the bloodstream and dosages. I had been taking ginger capsules and drinking some ginger tea until I had to go back on chemo.

Hi all,

Yes, I believe they are working on testing in the UK and will probably have studies. I figure I got nothing to loose to try the capsules. I think any method of trying to get ginger past the stomach and into the blood stream is the issue as so many things we ingest gets weakened by the stomach acid. I believe giving the majority of the stomach acid to work on food leaves less for the acid to work on the ginger if that follows the food.

I think any ginger would help, but I wanted to test this idea with the 550mg capsules so I can measure how much I am ingesting to measure any difference. I am scheduled for another CA125 in May so that gives me time to see if my CA125 is affected or slowed down?

Kwest you suggested adding fresh ginger to your food; which might work, but remember that the majority of the stomach acid might destroy it if the ginger is in the first food that goes down. Maybe try eating something substantial to work on first and then ingest the food with the ginger after?

I figure the idea is to give the ginger the best chance of getting into our system and not being wasted by stomach acid consuming and destroying the properties of whatever is in the ginger that ovarian cells don't like?

I juce some ginger root and drink it with a glass of water. The ginger is very strong and you have to add enough water to the ginger to make it pallatable. I also find when I drink it my stomach feels better.I know ginger is used to treat nausea.Keep Positive

Cute name! love it...I was just wondering if pickled ginger would do the same? I love this..I ate some sushi the other night and they always serve it with sushi and I ate the hole dish of ginger by its self!!! I have heard that too about ginger killing ovca cells.

Looking forward to your update about your ca125..you go girl and eat that ginger! prayers and hugs to you.

Stacy

Hello Hooty OvO,

I had ovarian cancer in the first part of 2007. My sister found out that a teaspoon of flaxseed oil mixed with about a cup of cottage cheese helps. She, also, found out ginger is great for cancer treatment. I've been taking ginger everyday for the past two years. It is good for the digestion. Ginger capsules, ginger tea, ginger ale, its all good. Cinnamon is good for the digestion, also.

I drink ginger tea daily. It tastes absolutely awful! But it's for a good cause so it doesn't bother me. It's extremely strong. It's a brand called Triple Leaf and I get it at the health food store. However, I have been drinking it since late last year and still the disease recurred. But I won't stop. I can't imagine that the ginger we ingest is anywhere near as powerful as the stuff they poured on cancer cells however. I'm very interested to hear about your progress Hooty!

Dear Hooty,
Great minds....I had just gone to the UofM clinical trials site as I had heard that they were involved in doing something with ginger and ovca. Then, I read your message....yay!

I'll be sure to check out the UK stuff as I couldn't find anything in the UofM site.

Thanks bunches!
Kathleen

Hi all, thanks for your replies and information. Information is 'power' and we need lots of that to kill off those suckers. :o)

Lemona, I believe your comment 'I can't imagine that the giner we ingest is anywhere near as powerful as the stuff they poured on cancer cells'. That's what I figure so all ginger would be good I expect; tea, juiced etc. but too bad there wasn't a way of measuring that ginger taking it that way?

I want to see if the capsules work as I know that each capsule is 550mg. I live in B.C. Canada and the product I buy is 'Nature's Way' Ginger, 100 capsules, 550 mg each, Ginger root in a gelatin capsule, made by Nature's Way of Canada Ltd www.naturesway.com

Also, I wanted to mention that when we heat food it takes away a lot of the benefits so I would imagine if ginger is heated the same goes for that too.

Hugs to all!!!

When I was at our Earth Fare supermarket today, I had my fresh ginger in my cart when I found you can buy organic powdered ginger! So, today when I juiced my carrots, celery and green apple, I added 1/4 teaspoon of the ginger in my juice and I could hardly taste it so next time, I'm going to add 1/2 teaspoon as see how it tastes :)

Hey Ladies,

Timing is everything. I have the U of M paper in front of me and had just reviewed it before coming on line. I've been on organic ginger capsules by New Chapter Organics for a year now with no recurrence. I take (3) 1200mg capsules a day. No side effects, although it can thin your blood and I already have that problem, but the ovca over-rides that issue.

At U of M they found that the dissolved ginger powder induced ovca cell death at similar or better rates than the standard platinum based chemo. Even better they feel it will prevent the tumor cells from becoming resistant to treatment.

At U of M they are also looking at Reservatol found in red wine or as a supplement and curcumin the actic ingredient in the curry spice turmeric.

Sue

Hi Abbashild and Suemac,

I guess taking it in the juice is good and if you can't taste anything overwhelming maybe boost it too 1/2 tsp.

And the paper sounds good. I figure that if I take 2 capsules (easy to swallow - go down nicely) and take these three times a day, then it does give the little suckers time to regroup. :o)

My main concern is getting the most benefit from the mouth directly to the cancer cells and bypass that stomach acid. I figure the more ginger that is present in my blood when the cells eat, the better.

Keep us all posted and we will monitor our progress with our little ginger experiments and see if it leads to the 'root' of the OVCA problem (pun intended).

(((Hugs to you all))))

Hi girls,
Back in 2006/07, while I was having my 14 month remission, I literally took hundreds of supplements to try and prolong my remission (from stage 3C ovca).
While I havent been taken so many supplements of late, because I'm in a clinical trial, I do strongly believe in using ginger as therapy.
Like SueMac, I use the New Chapter gingercaps and vcaps, although I've used other ginger brands in the past as well. I also drink Ginger tea when I can, and rarely when I'm up to it, do I have the real ginger (can't handle it).
Other than ginger, I also strongly believe that Garlic (in all its forms - liquid, capsules, fresh etc), Curcumin/Turmeric as well as Maitake D-Fraction are important anti-cancer supplements and immune boosters.
Sorry... had to respond to this thread as Ginger is definitely one of my best friends!

Sue

Forgot to mention, this is the link to the New Chapter "Daily Ginger" that I take:

I also use the other New Chapter ginger products (Gingerforce):

Hi Sue

Thanks for the Great Info! I too live in MI. Think I know you....if this is the Sue I am Thinking of...you would have loved Kay Huberty info. If not the Sue I am thinking of, her books are still very informative.

Hugs Patty

Pat!!!!!!

Don't you look sassy in that photo! Laughed out loud to get your message. How long have you been posting here? Check out my MAGNESIUM MAGIC post, because if the doc said my liver and kidneys were shot and I could only take one med instead of the dozens I do, but it was my choice - magnesium would be it, hands down, even over ginger!

I was with the One on One Ovarian support group in spirit on 3/12, while sitting in the south tower surgical waiting room, while my hubby was having hip replacement surgery. Love nutrition information and had a lot of questions to ask, but hey family is priority. You guys are like my second family!!

Was bummed when I heard you were moving to Florida, cuz you're a live wire at those meetings. I just wrote something this morning on another blog about our support group and invited people here to get the newsletter.

Thought I'd see you at the April meeting, but just checked the calendar and let out a damn! We'll be arriving in Marco Island for a weeks vacation that day. Will you be in Michigan for much longer?

Super Surprised Sue
