Has anyone done more than 6 rounds of Carbo/Taxol. My doctor said no more than 6 rounds, but I have heard of people that has went up to 12 rounds, and are in remission.

Thank you and God Bless,

Shari

Hi Shari, the first time around I did the Carbo/Taxol for 9 rounds. got a full 4 years 9 months of remission and then started Taxol in April . I was given a choice I choose just the Taxol . Im breezing through it. Im going 3 more rounds , Ive done 9.
If you want to look at it this way, I just had my Pet Scan and on my last visit after 9 round was declared NED.
I opted for 3 more rounds, my doctors feel as " an insurance policy" and since im tolerating it well, why not? The only side effect I have is hair loss and after nerlasta some mild ache in my legs, which I curb with Tylnol.

Cheryl4Teal,
that is such great news for you. What was your CA-125 when you started withthe Carbo/Taxol, and what Stage and Grade are you. Mine is a Stage 4 Grade 3. I really appreciate your input. And Good Luck on your remaining treatments

God Bless
Shari

I just heard, recently, that more frequent dosing has shown to be effective for women with late stage ovca. See below:

Frequent Dosing Can Improve Survival in Ovarian CancerStudy finds dose-dense paclitaxel plus carboplatin improves progression-free, overall survival
Publish date: Sep 21, 2009

MONDAY, Sept. 21 (HealthDay News) -- More frequent dosing with paclitaxel combined with carboplatin improves survival in women with advanced ovarian cancer, according to a study published early online Sept. 20 in The Lancet to coincide with the European Cancer Organisation meeting in Berlin.
As part of an open label Phase III trial, Noriyuki Katsumata, M.D., from the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, and colleagues randomly assigned 631 women with stage II to IV epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer to conventional treatment with paclitaxel plus carboplatin (every three weeks), or dose-dense paclitaxel (once a week) plus carboplatin (every three weeks).
After a median follow-up of 29 months, the researchers found that the median progression-free survival was significantly longer in the dose-dense group (28.0 versus 17.2 months; hazard ratio, 0.71). Three-year overall survival was also significantly longer in patients receiving the dose-dense regimen (72.1 versus 65.1 percent; hazard ratio, 0.75). More patients in the dose-dense group had neutropenia and high-grade anemia and discontinued treatment early, while the frequency of other toxic effects was similar.
"The use of such dose-dense therapy should be decided on an individual basis together with other options for women with advanced-stage ovarian cancer, including intraperitoneal therapy, neoadjuvant treatment, or substitution of docetaxel," Michael A. Bookman, M.D., from the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson comments in an accompanying editorial.

Thank you so much for your information it is very helpful.

This time around my CA125 at my recurrance was 75 when they started its now sitting at 12.
My stage was 3b Grade 1.

I had 6 rounds of carbo/taxol/avastin through June, surgery in July, and am now in the midst of 6 additional treatments of carbo/taxol. So I will have had 12 treatments in all of carbo/taxol since March. My onc told me that patients who respond well to the combo are good candidates to continue, however after 6 treatments you are at risk of becoming carbo-resistent, and can therefore have a terrible reaction to the carbo at any time after those initial 6. So now before each treatment I am given a shot of carbo in my arm and they wait for 1/2 hour and watch the spot - to see if I have a reaction, like an allergy test. So far I have not had a problem. I am IIIC and my CA125 went from 566 to 20.5. My most recent CA125 went up to 23.5 but I was assured that it is a neglible increase. I have now had 9 treaments. 3 more to go! Initial diagnosis March 2009.

OhMama.
Congratulations on your numbers. What Grade was your tumor?. Where are you getting treated at?

Shari

I had 6 treatments of carbo/taxol initially and that put me into a 6-year remission. When I got my first recurrence, we did the carbo/taxol again and switched to carbo/taxotere for a few treatments because of neuropathy. That only got me 10 months of remission.

I guess it depends on the dosage, the mix and the frequency and how you react to the drugs.

I went for 9 rounds and was in remission for 18 months. I am now back on carbo-taxol for 6 months. I had my first treatment yesterday. They also gave me my flu shot. There is an article from the ovarion cancer alliance stating people with ovc are more suseptible to getting the flue. they say wash your hands often and avoid touching your face. Just thought I'd pass this on. Good luck on your treatment.

I couldn't have tolerated more than six rounds of the stuff because my counts were all messed up and I was a disaster physically in a very wide variety of ways.

I was also working full time on my feet and on the run all day teaching art to 600 students per week, if I had a less active/strenous job it would've been easier.

Just my two cents :)

9 carbo taxols for me mainly because my IP port didn't work right for the first three so they were given all IV. Then I had six more IV/IP. And now am NED but taking 24 IV weekly taxols at 40 mgs/sq meter. I have heard in Baltimore they are giving 80mgs/sq meter for 12 weeks so overall they and I get the same cumulative dose but theirs is more dense.

The extra iv taxols are to prolong Disease free interval and the oncologist hopes they prolong survival and increase odds of a good long remission.

It has been a long haul, 14 months of chemo as my first were monthly not every three weeks. He said it was easier on a patient to have them monthly, less delays etc for low counts. I tended to agree.

I had 8 rounds of Carbo/Taxotere. The last two were difficult to deal with. It seemd like all of the side effects came and stayed.
It took me about five months to start to feel better. That's my story.

Shari123,

I had Taxol way back when it was first available. It requried a 3 day hospital stay and was, at that time, still made from the bark of the Pacific Yew tree. It hadn't been synthesized yet!

I've also had Taxol and Carboplatnin, Cysplatnin and Taxol, 10% reduced Taxol and then Taxotere.

I'm still alive and kicking!

lovemnms,

I had a terrible time with Taxotere. I'm glad yours were only the last two. I've done a LOT of chemo in my day but Taxotere, for me, was by FAR the worst by-way-of side effects!

this time last year i had 4 rounds of carbo/taxol my CT scan showed no shrinking or inprovement, my doctor was at a loss but said he would try and give me smaller doses weekly, so from January to may this year i had weekly treatment, i have not had a miricle but have had some shrinking.
I am now on tomoxifen to hold the cancer, i know more chemo will come but the longer i am off it the stronger i will be.
You have had some good advice from this site so i wish you well, and god bless you too.

crolly xx
