hi,
my mother has just been diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer. We live in san jose, CA, so i am wondering who is the best doctor to visit to do the surgery, and where is the best hospital to do the surgery?
would I be better off going to stanford or uc davis cancer center?

hi iam paula in seattle, wa. i have stage 3 c ovarian cancer and i go to seattle cancer care alliance in seattle. i love this place they are careing and very experienced in cancer. i get the best treatments and they have the best team of doctors and nurses, you do not get put in a chair and forgotten when going for treatments. they treat me like a queen. even tho my cancer is back i hope to continue a new phase of treatments in this loving treatment center, they even feed you while your there, free. i just think all of us going thru this terrible sickness should be treated like we matter, like we are women who are loved by the people who are taking care of us. this place makes me feel like i matter.

Hopefully you will get some more responses with better info than I have, but here is a little info. I live outside of Sac, so I go to UC Davis. I am satisfied with my tx there. They have a Gyn Cancer team, which I like more than just seeing generalized Oncologists. My Oncologist is Sid Scudder, the chemo guru. My surgeon (gyn/onc) is Liserowitz. I have a second surgery coming up, for my first recurrence. My prior tx was in Colorado, so I cannot really speak too much at how it is going for me at Davis, but so far, so good.

A couple of women on this site go to Kaisers in the Bay Area, but I assume your mom doesn't have Kaiser.

A couple of women highly recommended Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Mountain View, doctors Pisani and Chen. They raved about them.

I'd give them a try myself if I didn't live 4+ hours from Mountain View.

Hope that helped a little

Hi,
I'm 72 with OVC (stage iii-c) and am an RN and lived for 12 years in downtown San Jose (in the old Victorian area). I'm living now in San Diego and am very happy with Kaiser here. If I were in San Jose I'd definately go to Stanford Medical Center.

I'll keep you in my prayers and let me know if you have other questions about the CA area medical scene.

thanks all for your replies, I did some research and USNews rated UCSF at 9th place and stanford at 10th place in the US.
it rated MD anderson at 1st and memorial sloan kettering at 2nd, so locally my best options seem to be UCSF and Stanford.

Hi Mathwiz,

I live in Cupertino, Ca. a few minutes from you. I am one of the ladies that jeaniet spoke of when she mentioned Dr's Chen and Pisani. They are affiliated with El Camino Hosp. Mt. View. & Palo Alto Medical Foundation formally Camino medical group. I was told by a few nurses in the hospital that women come from all over the state to go to these guys. I am a 3A. I had my surgery last June and finished chemo in Nov. I just had my checkup today and am doing well. My CA 125 was 6. Good luck in your search. Let us know how make out.

mathwiz......yes, those 2 are highly rated cancer centers, but might not be the best in terms of Ovarian Cancer, so check them out specifically for OC. Some cancer centers do better with some forms of cancer than others. Make sure a gyn/onc does her surgery!

I too am in San Jose CA. I'm very pleased with my OBGYN Oncologist at Santa Clara Kaiser. Dr. Daniel Kato is the best as far as I'm concerned. Hope this helps. I wish your mother all the best!

mathwhiz, Dr. Jonathan Berek of Stanford is a very well known gyn-onc, specializing in ovarian cancer. Here is his bio:

Mathwiz.....here is another doc I just heard of. I would love to use her, even though she is so far away, but she doesn't take my insurance.
Kate Ohanlan.....in Redwood City. Does surgery at Sequoia Hospital.
