I am currently getting radiation treatments and will do chemo next. I'm just wondering how many of you that are not taking chemo, will be getting the vaccine? What about the swine flu vaccine?

Got mine yesterday. Pneumonia vaccine as well. May be a little too late as my 16 year old has been throwing up all day.
Gay, are you through with treatment?
I am. Finished up at the end of July so a little over two months.
I got seasonal flu vaccine and pneumonia shot too. Plan to get Swine shot as soon as I can. Scary times to be immune compromised.
This pneumonia vaccine site hurts like a bugger today. I told my husband that he got off easy with just the one. At least that one is good for 5 years. It sucks being "high risk" like I'm old or something.
There's a 411 flu shot link at the top right on this site (in the twitter area) that tells you everything you need to know regarding the seasonal flu and the H1N1 vaccines.
I'm definitely NOT getting the swine flu vaccine, having read that it contains mercury, a known poison... And I've always been skeptical about the flu shot.
I don't know, I'd like to be convinced more strongly about what to think about it.
Sorry to be no help.
Pneumonia and flu shot already...My clinic will have the H1 next week. I will deff be getting this H1.
Im not trying to conivince anybody BUT , like a lot of folks I too was a skeptic on it.
I spoke to my Nurse Practioner, 3 of my doctors on my team, my primary care doctor, and for the heck of it my best friends primary was willing to answer my questions.
People like us have weakened immune systems.
They all said this not knowing each other , and basically all said the same thing. Even if we are not going through chemo our body STILL has a weakened immune systym cause of the cancer.
I got to say all my close freinds got their flu shots already cause of me , and im greatful as a token of love for me. They dont want me sick, for us its a deadly mix.
Im NOT telling you not what to do but im playing it safe.
Look nothing can be more toxic than chemo in my opinion, ill take my chances.
Im too active and go out too much not too.

I don't plan to have either. Two years ago in the hospital my doc ordered a flu shot and a pneumonia shot. Only time in my life I have had either one.
I know that statistically I am in a high risk group, but I just don't feel the need. I also worry that the H1N1 vaccine is still so new.
Let's hope I haven't jinxed myself now by saying I won't get sick.
I had one last year while on chemo. I don't know about this year.
I am not currently doing chemo but I got the flu shot. My chemo doctor recommended it. If he says "yes" then I do it! I trust him. I'm still thinking about the H1N1 shot. I'm thinking of YES.
Good luck everyone.

My onc/gyn says yes to flu shot; no to H1N1. I wouldn't take the H1N1 anyway as the first round of trials had deaths and some whoops(per CDC) ; the new batch is being given without trials. I got the flu shot last week when I finished round 4 chemo; it was the only chemo time I was severely nauseated, sick, and extremely tired.
Definitely not. Never have. Never will. I never got the flu since being diagnosed two years ago. I started getting a cough with chest pain the other day and a headache so I drank the whole bottle...25 oz. of mangosteen juice over a 4 hour period and it was gone the next day! Those antioxidants and xanthones are powerful :)
Also, watched a report yesterday of a young woman in her 20's who's been married only 2 years who got the flu shot and now can't walk forward w/o GREAT disability and with GREAT jerking movements and her speech is GREATLY slurred...but she can walk backwards with normalcy and she can run...but she can't walk forward. It was so sad to watch! I cried for her and for her husband.
The flu shot also as reported here does contain mercury and gives you a much higher chance to develop Alzheimers or other dementia with each year you receive any type of flu shot. The number of dementia patients is growing in large numbers each year. Now, some of you may laugh and think "Well, I may not be here in a few years." Well, I do plan on being here for a long time :)
In an interview on CNN, Dr. Oz said that the hospital where he works states it's mandatory for everyone to get it but that his wife and children aren't getting it. My husband works at an exclusive retirement community and every year they try to get him to get a flu shot, and he refuses every year as it is his own decision.
Everyone has to make their own decision but should make themselves informed and then decide. It's everyone's right, after all.
Blessings and hugs!!
My doctor told me to get both flu shot and H1 shot, but not the pneumonia. I already got the flu shot.
It's easy for me to say NO to both as I don't have cancer myself. But even if I had, I would not have any of those shots. On top of mercury, there are other nasty additives/adjuvants/preservatives in those vaccines as well, like aluminum and formaldehyde. I personally don't think that it is good for cancer patients to add more toxic burden to their bodies. I would love to hear what Dr. Block says about it at the Block Center. Maybe somebody who is having treatment there can tell us.
Bottom line is we all have to do our homework and get educated on all the pro's and con's before making the decision. Most doctors and nurses will recommend the vaccine - it is a given. But especially with the Swine flu vaccine I would be very wary as it has been fast tracked for approval and those who are taking it will be the guinea pigs, nobody knows if it is really going to be effective and nobody knows how bad the side effects will be - short term and long term. Even the regular flu vaccine, if the strains that are in the vaccine are not the ones that will actually hit, they are also going to be useless. The strains are chosen many months before flu season starts and nobody knows which strains are going to hit and how they will mutate. It's a gamble.
I am on chemo and got my flu shot last week. I get one every year, chemo or not.
They haven't mentioned the H1N1 at the cancer center and unless my doctor insists on it, I don't plan to ask for it.
My Mom's primary doctor didn't seem too keen on giving her the H1N1, but he did give her the regular flu shot.
I am seven months out of chemo, and I did get the regular flu shot two weeks ago - no problems. My Gyn/Onc said for me to take both, but H1N1 not available here as yet. Haven't decided if I will take the second one - will decide when it becomes available.
My twin grandsons are three years old and another on the way in February. I want to be with them and protect myself as best I can. Best Wishes to all!

CDC list of ingredients in vaccines:

One ingredient in some of the seasonal flu vaccines is Thimerosal which is an organomercury compound (approximately 49% mercury by weight) used as an antiseptic and antifungal agent. It is also used as a preservative in some IV drugs.

I got both shots at the advice of my Oncologist and my general physician. We are considered Immuned suppresed and have to be careful. I also work in the health field. Just last week a patient was so sick after surgery and when she came back on Thursday she told me she had H1N1!! I'm glad I got both shots. Maggie
