Anyone using alternative therapy (CAM, herbs, etc)?

Hi everyone,
Anyone out there blends fruit/veg shakes on a daily basis to drink, and doing alternative therapy (CAM, herbs, etc)? Any good results? My mom has stage IV ovarian cancer, had debulking surgery in Sep 2012, 6 rounds of taxol/carbo, reoccurence within 6 months. She had her first doxil last week. We are looking into CAM, trying something else. Anyone can share with us her experience? We live in CA.

Thank you. May God Bless!

I am definitely using other therapies, not on a huge scale, but doing organic eating, supplements et al as guided by a good, cancer specialist naturopath doctor who works with my oncologist. I am convinced it will help. Whether it will be a big enough "gun" to overcome this cancer remains to be seen. Also doing metformin, which is even more powerful when given in conjunction with chemo. It is a little controversial,, so you will have to do your own "google" research on studies and decide for yourself. Of course, you doctor will have to be on board as it is a prescription.

I can give you list of the supplements / herbs my doctor recommended if you like. I have heard others talk about frankincense as well, though my doc did not give me that one. also mistletoe, but my doc didn't give that to me either.

Can you post here what supplements/herbs your doctor recommended?

What is CAM?

I've been drinking 30-35 oz of veggie juice daily for the last few months. I've also cut sugar out of my diet, have reduced salt intake. I meditate and drink dandelion tea also. I'm not sure if it's helping or not. My tumors have been stable since November 2012, but I only started these treatments a few months ago.

CAM stands for Complementary Alternative Medicine. My mom has stage IV ovarian cancer went to see a naturopath who recommends her to drink organic vegetable and fruit mix every day, plus some herbs/spices. This sure helps her constipation. The naturopath believes that frequent stooling (2-4 times/day) is a way to detox the body.

When not on chemo, as I now am, I take 40 supplements a day. Also, I use Iscador, 20 mg every six days, 500 mg of Metformin, although I'm not diabetic, and a daily baby aspirin as well as eating organic. Is any of it doing any good? Who know? As many know, I've recurred twice within the last year, each time with so called "minimal" disease. Maybe if i weren't doing all the CAM, my recurrences would have been much more severe and wide spread. I'll never know! I just found out yesterday that I'm back in full remission with a "complete response" to Doxil. I finish the regimen in early August, assuming no delays, and will then go back to my 40 supplements every day. Best to all.

Hi All, I also do alot of CAM. I start my day with fresh lemon with hot water. This helps alkalize the system. Then into a far infared sauna for 45 min. This is good for detox, and also is said to help shrink tumors that are within 2 inches of the skin surface. I love it too, so its win-win. Then I walk for 5 miles. Then breakfast of a kale plus veggie and raspberry green drink. I prefer to blend rather than juice, I need the fiber and I hate to waste anything. I am 95 % vegan and organic. I use turmeric, garlic, cinnamon, mushroom extract, Miatake fresh mushrooms[especially good for treating ovarian cancer]. I use no sugar, flour, white rice, white potatoes, corn. I take a multi vitamin, calcium, 5000mg.s of vitamin d.[ I live in the fog of northern Ca.] I also use 500 mg.s of metformin. I used low dose naltrexone for 2 years but it did not stop new tumors from developing so I have switched to metformin. The most important weapon I have against the aliens within is that I have NEVER believed that they could kill me. Have a great day everyone!

I started acupuncture right away, and do a low inflammation diet, Multi vit, affirmations and guided imagery, beef bone soup, and dandelion tea. My doc doesn't want any other supplements. I have done well with the first 4 chemos, 2 to go.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience. Hi stillbreathing, may I ask what stage you are and what chemotherapy you've gone through or currently getting? My mom started to blend mixture of vegetables and fruits, which has kept her bowel movement going everyday. She is eating a lot more veggie now, beans, whole grains, and tries to go organic as much as possible. She avoids all refined sugar and simple carbs. She is also taking gastric enzymes and probiotics prescribed by her naturopath, plus lethicin, bee pollen, CoQ10, fiber powder, etc.

If anyone is interested in modifying your diet, I would recommend this book by Diana Dyer, MS, RD. A registered dietitian and 3 time cancer survivor. I feel so inspired by her book. http://www.cancerrd.com/

Stay strong! Keep in touch. May God Bless!

juanjuan-you are a champ for supporting your mother and gathering information for her; she is very lucky. I have been doing CAM since dx, and it helped me beat early stage OvCa. Now, it's going to support me while I fight a new primary, which would have progressed much faster in someone less healthy than I. I'm glad you're working with a naturopath, hopefully a FABNO, and not just plucking anecdotes from an internet board.

Please keep us posted on your mother's progress. Wishing you both the very best.

juan-juan,
I was sage 1 grade 3 when diagnosed 10 years ago. Since then I have had 4 recurrences. All of the new tumors have been growing near my pancreas. A single tumor 3 times, 2 one time.I just had surgery to remove the current one. So I am not sure of the staging anymore.Stage 1 grade 3 with metastases maybe. I have done 15 rounds total of carboplatin and taxol. I am now going to start 4 rounds of cisplatin and topotecan. I had the last tumor chemo sensitivity tested and this combo had the best results for me in the lab, so I'm going for it! Good luck with your Mom, she is lucky to have you. Sounds like you have the diet down great. Be ware of "fairy dust" miracle cures...There is alot of snake oil out there. There have been so many people tell me 'If you only do this" the cancer will not come back. My standard reply is" how many people have you cured of ovarian cancer?" Always do your homework! The best to you,
Stillbreathing

the supplements I did not put on the previous listing are: berberine, 200 mg twice a day AND menaquinone, 45 mg. The ingredients in BCQ (by Vital Nutrients) boswellia serrate gum extract, 200 mg; high potency bromelain, 100 mg; curcuma longa rhizome extract, 200 mg; quercetin dehydrate 100 mg. I take 4 of these a day, per my ND instructions.

Whatever anybody does or suggests, it is of the utmost importance to work with an experienced naturopath (experienced in treating cancer patients) before taking supplements and nutraceuticals. Each person is different and what works for one might not work for another. There are many good anti-cancer supplements and nutraceuticals to chose from but it is still a guessing game unless you get the help from someone who is experienced and will look at your specific needs.

Thank you for all your kind and encouraging words and sharing your experience with me. I'm going to check out Dr. Andrew Weil's website and see what he says about healing.

i agree with mom82. its very important. my doctor's (ND) job is to help me sort through all the cancer "cures" I read about and figure out which are most effective. so far, there is no miracle cure short of a true miracle.

I have been using an herbalist in Oregon for about 3 years (dx.2/2009) with Stage 111C fallopian tube cancer. Got recurrence after 10 months and then started Doxil. did not work--back on Carbo and decided to deal with an herbalist. I have had well over 25 rounds of Taxol since I started chemo and have no peripheral neuropathy or any side effects--plenty of energy. I deal with him via telephone. He has all my info including diet, exercise, surgical reports, blood work, etc. Set me up with a daily smoothie. If you are interested, his name is Jonathan Treasure and you can call the clinic for more info at 541-862-5402. He is very knowledgeable about tumor assay, etc.
Hoping your Mother is dancing with NED soon.
