Additional interesting and promising research about antioxidants

Got this today. Certainly gives more weight (IMO) to the theory that an anti-oxidant rich diet is important. I also believe that antioxidant supplements are necessary. I realize this is a controversial area, and some docs aren't big fans of supplements. My gyn/onc thinks diet is better than supplements. I personally believe in both.

Remember that some of the antioxidant rich foods include berries, cruciferous veggies like broccoli, tomatoes, and resveratrol rich foods like grapes. If you Google it, you can find sites that list the top ten or twenty anti-oxidant rich foods.

Reactive oxygen has key role in metastasis

United Press International

LA JOLLA, Calif., Sep 21, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Scientists at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in California say they've discovered reactive oxygen plays a key role in cancer metastasis.

The researchers, led by Professor Sara Courtneidge, said they determined reactive species, such as superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, help form invadopodia -- cellular protrusions implicated in cancer cell migration. They found inhibiting reactive oxygen reduces invadopodia formation, thereby limiting cancer cell invasion.

"Reactive oxygen has a complex cellular role," Courtneidge said. "Normal cells use reactive oxygen to signal, grow and move. Immune cells, such as neutrophils, produce reactive oxygen to destroy bacteria. Now we find that reactive oxygen is necessary for invadopodia formation, which allows cancer cells to become metastatic."

Courtneidge said invadopodia facilitate cancer cell migration by breaking down the extracellular matrix that normally keeps cells in place.

Using invadopodia-rich mouse fibrosarcoma cells, Courtneidge and her colleagues tested a number of antioxidants and found both a marked reduction in invadopodia formation and invasive behavior. The scientists repeated the experiments with human melanoma, head and neck and breast cancer cell lines and also saw a marked reduction in invadopodia formation.

The scientists said their findings might lead to new cancer drug interventions.

The study appears in the Sept. 15 issue of the journal Science Signaling.

Very interesting. I guess that this hives some credability to IV Vitamin C therapy.

Oops, typo... That "hives" should be "gives"

Get the book "Anti Cancer - A new way of Life" by Servan-Schreiber.
He explains in detail which foods do what, their role in fighting cancer. Some foods have anti-angiogenesis properties, others anti-inflammatory, etc.... I think that attacking the cancer on all fronts at the same time makes a lot of sense and combining the right foods, herbs, spices will do just that.
Cancer cells need to produce inflammation to sustain their growth, they rely on an inflammatory factor secreted by tumor cells: NF-kappa B. Blocking production of this factor makes cancer cells mortal again and prevents metastasis. Many natural approaches are capable of blocking the action of this substance:
catechins (in green tea)
reseveratrol (red wine).
Cancerous tumors cannot grow if they don't succeed in diverting blood vessels for their own use (angiogenesis). Anti-angiogenesis foods: mushrooms, green tea, spices, herbs.
Turmeric is an amazing cancer fighter. A researcher proved in 2005 that it was capable of acting on breast cancer tumors that no longer responded to Taxol. Dietary doses reduced the spread of metastasis impressively. For example turmeric in pill form is poorly absorbed. And it has to be mixed with pepper to pass the intestin barrier. Pepper multiplies the absoorption of turmeric by 2000. Turmeric is also a powerful NF-kappa B antagonist.
I believe that a multi-facetted approach is the way to go. Antioxidants are only one aspect, but an important one.
So your doctor has a point when he says it is better to get the benefits of these wonderful foods through diet rather than supplements.
That book is truly fascinating - I could not put it down.

I have it on order from Amazon! Should be here on Monday. I also ordered the book by Dr. Weil and Dr. Block. There is a third book, but of course my chemobrain can't remember the name of it. I am looking forward to all three of them.

Good post
we are all learning about the waht to do's and avoids...
all on a journey to wellness...
I am still leanring...
reading once again ( lost that ability to absorb during chemo) & I am just getting it back.)
everything was like reading blah blah blah... etc...
thanks to the chemo brain fog

thank you for posting this info
