A positive experience

I just had to post about what I did tonight. My hair started really falling out yesterday (first chemo 2+ weeks ago). It was a tough day for me - hair is hair, yes, but its hard to see it fall out in your hands none the less. So tonight instead of being down about it - out of the blue I announced to my kids "Who wants to cut mommy's hair?" (They are 11, 9 & 6) They each took turns and cut my hair short. They had so much fun and admired their work. So what started out as a reminder that I have cancer turned into a family fun night that I know they will never forget. I just wanted to share!

What an awesome way to deal with the beginning of your hair loss. I bet your kids had a ball! How often can they do that to mommy! Keep up your great attitude! I just finished my last chemo last week and I am ready to see new growth! Hang in there!

That is terrific that you could turn that into a positive experience. Good for you!

I also think it is great that your children are involved in helping Mom so that they don't feel so removed from the process. When my hair started growing back in, my older boy (12) used to rub my head and say it felt like a fuzzy sheep.

I hope your treatments continue to go well.

What a neat idea. I'm sure they loved being your beautician!! I have 2 daughters (21, 17). When all my hair fell out and I began with wigs and scarves, I would tell my daughters to let me know if they were bringing their boyfriends back to the house after a date. One night I texted one daughter to remind her to let me know so I could put my "head" on before they came. Her boyfriend saw the text and they both had a good laugh. I finished my last treatment Dec. 26th and am enjoying the re-growth of my hair now! Wishing you the best as go through your treatments. Hang in there!

You know that was a great idea. It probably made your kids a little more comfortable with the idea of what is happening to your hair. My daughter was 12 when I was going through treatment, and she really had some trouble with me being bald at first. But in my attempt at protecting her, I wore my wig the day my head was shaved, and told her to tell me when she felt comfortable enough to see my bald head. I think several weeks went by before she was ready.

That is awesome...turning lemons into lemonade. Be prepared for your scalp to be sore. And you may sweat alot...mostly the head. I wish someone had told me about that since it was very upsetting since I didn't know if it was normal or not. You have a great attitude and it will help your body fight the cancer.

Thank you ladies - it was a great night. Of course this morning I am looking at a hack-job haircut - LOL! Its all good. Congrats LisaH & Sunny on having your last chemo! Jeannali - I look forward to the fuzzy sheep stage & youngmom its great that you were able to do what your daughter needed - kids all react to this differently, I am sure girls especially because they have a different connection to hair than boys do. And thank you momanderson in the insight to what to expect!

What a wonderfully positive experience for you and your children! To involve them will help make them feel a part of your experience and closer to you.

Keep that wonderfully positive attitute and your chemos will go accordingly. My husband shaved my head after my first chemo - very similar experience with hair falling out - and we did get a really good laugh that night.

Take good care - you are an inspiration!

What a very great idea! I'm sure the kids had a great time doing something special with their Mom.

It's tough to lose your hair the first time (or any other time really), but you'll manage. Eventually you'll feel free of not having to wash and style it, or shave your legs - but then you'll be ready for it to be back and all the fussing. You've got a great smile and will be terrific with or without hair.

Good luck with your treatments! And enjoy those wonderful kids.

The scalp soreness does go away. It is just that first treatment after the hair falls out...at least that was my experience. I love what you did letting your kids cut your hair....that is the sweetest thing I have heard. What a wonderful mom you are! I would think letting the kids participate will help them adjust to the news. What an awesome idea!

That was just so creative and your kids had fun too!!! My son had just turned 2 when I had cancer. We had him watch Daddy shave my head. I just did not want him to be scared when he saw me bald.
