Update on my surgery

Hi everybody, it has been quite the experience so far. Got through surgery, but they had a very hard time getting my pain under control yet keeping my respirations up at the same time. Started adding food and nausea got worse. I had reaction to tape on bag and developed blisters (ouch!!!) so they switched bags.
I was released yesterday, even after making comment nothing much was going into my bag yesterday. Was home couple hours and developed excruciating pain in my belly and then the vomiting started. My friend called dr on call, he said to drive back to hospital (over an hour drive). We barely got started out of town and she had to take me to the ER in our town. They got pain/nausea under control. Did cat scan. I have high WBC and scan showed blockage. So at 2 in the morning I was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Indy!
SO, I am not feeling good at all! Very discouraged!!
I appreciate your prayers!!!

Bam I had the same problem. Had total colostomy surgery the 29th of June. Went home the 4th of July. Went back in hospital the 6th of July cause of blockage. Was in there for 6 days. It wasn't no fun.

Oh Bam, bless your heart for even finding the energy to check in with the Group. Good heavens, when we said to stay in touch and keep us posted, this was NOT the news we wanted to hear! I hope that your issues get under control SOON! As far as reactions to wafer adhesives, remember that all of the companies will try to get you as a customer so they are happy to help and send you free samples to try. Be patient with the different appliances.. It really does take a while to find the perfect one for you....
Best wishes,
Cindy

Bam, I do pray that God touch you and heal you quickly.
God Bless you Bam I will continue to pray for you. Keep us posted.

I had my surgery in may and had a similar experiece. I became septic and was in the hospital for a month. I pray they get your blockage under control and are back home recuperating soon.

I share. Your pain and pray for you.
have faith and courage I did. I spent
21 days in the hospital 17 days in
Intensive. Care no food or drink with
tube up my nose.I was rushed to the
hospital by rescue and had emergency
surgery. Part of colon was removed.
It has been 3 months since surgery
And I am doing fine.so faith and courage
And you will be ok. My prayers go with you.

Oh my goodness. What a horrible experience for you. My hope and prayers are that you are feeling human soon and that the rest of your recovery is smooth.

Beth,

I can't believe they let you out of the hospital so soon!!! That's rediculous! I was in intensive care for 11 days then 7 days in a regular room after my surgery. I know hospital stays are shorter now but that is insane. I vomited everything for over a week and had to have a tube inserted down my nose into my stomach to control the vomiting. I couldn't go home until I could eat and manage my appliance by myself. I was told the vomiting was normal because of the shock to the body from such an invasive surgery. They kept trying to feed me normal food and it kept coming back up. No matter what they say, start easy with the food. Creamed soup, pudding, applesauce and such. Add more foods a little at a time until your system adjusts. In the beginning NO roughage. Get Well and keep us posted.

Prayers and hugs,

Debbie

Well, was npo Saturday, then the dr was going from clear liq at breakfast to soft foods at dinner yesterday but I couldn't get past soup without feeling quite nausea. He came in today and is pushing real diet and sending me home tonight if no vomiting.
Fingers crossed!
Feel like I am being rushed but don't like being in here either.

Don't push the diet too quickly even though your doctor wants you to advance. The more slowly and gently that you do it the better you will feel. When you get home make sure that you are taking lots and lots and lots of water, as well as your regular liquids with meals That will help keep the whole system gurgling along.

If you have very sensitive skin, I have peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum and I use a combination of supplies. Convatec bag and wafers mold able convex. I use adapt barrier seals (when pyoderma break out lost of fluid forms on skin) seal holds up to liquid better. Also have hypo or medifix tape. The secret we found to keep my skin from reacting to the adhessives was crusting. I put stoma powder on my skin after it is cleaned. Then I spray the powered with Cavillon bariear pray to creat a surface for the seal (dry brushed with new hope adhessive. Then comes the wafer sometimes using the 3M spray above on the skin before taping the wafer down. Crusting takes all reactions away for me. Might be something to check with your WOCN.

God Bless you, Bam. So sorry you are having such a dreadful time of it. How long did they keep you after surgery? Do you have a gastroenteroligist? When is your next appt? Please drink lots of water and get plenty of salt and rest. Dont lift anything over 5 or 10 lbs, to prevent getting a hernia. You are young and you will heal quickly. Stay strong and upbeat, Lots of prayers being said for your healing,
Carey

Bam, get well soon still praying for you to have a speedy recovery.
God Bless you

Dear Beth, it's been about a week since your surgery. And, I pray that it's going a little better for you! In my last post (before the surgery) I started telling you a little of my story hoping it would make you feel some better about what they were going to do to you. It is shocking how some hospitals these days send folks home before it's time to do it! I can tell you this, in the nearly 50 years since my first illeostomy, I have never had a blockage. There have been many times I thought I had one but it was always something else. The years have dulled my memory about the pain and problems of that first surgery but, I stayed in the hospital for a month after the surgery and I was fully prepared to take care of myself (thanks to Annie) when they finally let me go home. Remember, I told you about Annie and I owe you the rest of the story. But I'm gonna give you a little while to heal up some. I don't want you busting a gut laughing at me. But, I promise, I will tell you the rest of the story when I hear that things are lookin up for ya and your ready. Right now, just lay you head on the pillow, close your eyes and from your heart say....God, please help me. See our prayers for you rise up to his hands and reflect back down on you like a gentle rain that will wash your pain away. You can feel the power of His love at work making you well. We love you, get well soon, I want to hear the rest of YOUR story. Barney (friends call me Max)

Barney, that was very well said. Also all of us are waiting for the rest of the story.

Beth, please update us on your progress. I know it's difficult right now so if you are reading these, and are to tired to type, have your friend post an update. I am worried about you.

Hugs and prayers,

Debbie

Max, you are such a sweetheart!! Love the prayer! Thank you!!
Debbie, thanks for checking on me. I'm hanging in there. Still having major skin irritations, raw and bleeding, hurts and burns so bad!! Trying different appliances, milk of mag, crusting it first real good before applying as suggested on here. And nothing seems to be doing the trick. I actually have an angel of a friend on her way now at 11:00 at night to try something. She is also an ostomate. She has been wonderful to me. She actually authored a book about her experience. She is constantly praying for me, calling and is always there for me.
Emotionally I am handling this ALOT better than I expected. I totally give all praise to God for that and truly believe it is answered prayers!
Still in quite a bit of pain but getting through each day fully relying on God. FROGs!! That's my new motto!
Love you all!! Thanks for all your support!

Each day should get a little better. I hope your friend will be able to take care of your skin issues. Once everything is healed up and skin is healthy you will be amazed how good you feel. We are all sending good fibes your way and rest as much as you can. Once you get a good seal you should be good for at least 3 days and that will give your skin a chance to heal up. keep us posted on your progress.

Dear Beth
I since a little brightness in your picture. Your FROG will do amazing things for you! I owe you the "rest of the story" but, my daughter in law Kate Worth, author of many books and mother of 4 of my wonderful grandchildren did a great job of telling it for me in her blog: http:/kateworthromance.blogspot.com/. Go there and enjoy her writing. Love you and your FROG, Max

Beth, I'm glad you are doing so well. You will get the skin problems under control and then you will start feeling better. When you do be careful to take it easy at first as you have a long healing process ahead of you. I'm glad you have someone there to help you who has gone through this, she is a Godsend. Give her an extra hug from us.

Hugs,

Debbie

You are in our prayers everyday and knowing God will heal you with the power of prayers you are receiving from all your mates. God Bless you and shower you with his healing graces and his love.
