Tea

I know that many of you have used warm tea to get things moving. I grew up in the south, and I love my iced tea (unsweet). I drank a huge glass(32 oz) yesterday and did well, had a liquidy output just a while ago, and wondering if that's what caused it, or if it was something I ate. Any ideas?

I read that HOT beverages do the trick, but who knows!

Any liquid goes through pretty fast for me. Plus (I have ilieostomy) Salads and fruits also have a lot of water and also cause more fluid in the bag. Not sure cold tea is much different from hot tea. For a blockage, hot tea is advised, but cold tea sounds better for a typical day. You will eventually y know exactly what causes what. More or less. Sometimes when I eat out and do not want a heavy bag too soon, i eat a hamburger (just protein, no fiber) and the bun. also no fiber since it is white bread. Then some fries or baked potato (no skin). No huge amounts of water when I eat if I am tryong to keep things simple. Craziest meal i had about 4 months after surgery and sooo happy to eat. After 30 years of NEVER eating outlike this since I had ulcerative colitis. My girlfriends and I were celebrating me EATING! At the Cheesecake factory. Chocolate Martini. With whip cream. Huge sesame chicken salad. Huge piece of dulche du leche pie with xtra whip cream. My friends were so amazed to see me eat. iI always jsut picked and picked at food. And now I went to town. Result was Nausea (not throwing up or anything and 2 trips to laldies room since bag really filled up and then filled again. BUT it was fine and I did realize that I needed to eat a bit less at a time. So, like I said, you will figure this out. Eating bread for me also slows things down a bit. I dont eat fiber. But I dot take lots of vitamins. Cut in half because they don,t disolve in me. Doc says I am very healthy these days. I am almost 10 years with this. But after the first year of trial and error I have it down pat.

I drink sweet tea all the time a couple glasses a day and don't see any differance in out put at all. I am hooked on the stuff since I moved to Tenn from California 13 years ago. It was the first time I had sweet tea and I was hooked. lol

tjane I am hook on the tea in the south too. I love it but in the winter I like it warm and a bit of honey and lemon. I try to drink the green tea since it is really better for us to drink. I like it the green tea. I also like red zinger it is so good hot in winter. I like mint tea when I have pain or upset tummy. I like tea over coffee. I do have a cup of coffee almost evey morning.

gosh are we bored to be talking about tea like this lol Or do we just love tea that much.
God Bless all of us tea drinkers lol
Dolly

Dolly what is red zinger? Is that a flavor tea? Never heard of that one. Isn't lovely to talk about tea and not having a mishap of some type. Once in a while it is nice just to forget about the dreaded ostomy. Hope everyone has a nice evening. xox terri

Jane, yes it is nice to just talk about tea for a change and not all ostomy talk. I even dream of my ostomy bag I have this giant bag attached to my belly. lol enough of that.

Red zinger is made from hybiscus flowers ( did i spell that wrong) you get the idea. lol
It is wonderful very red and the flavor is so different. It is good only hot or very warm. Celeste tea makes it ( cannot spell that either.) It is with the herb teas. Many other companies make it too. I think it is my favorite winter tea. Oh I make a wonderful Russian tea for Christmas boy that is that ggggggggggggggggggggggggood stuff. Do any of you make it. It is made with pineapple juice tea cranberry jello reall (jello) spices. I will give you all the recipie for it if you want. I make it all winter a big pitcher and heat it up next to the fire with my sweetheat Joe. It smells so good too. Everyone in my family and friends love it too. It is a nice thing to take to a party for the hoildays. in a nice container.

I also make a spiced cider tea with the cranberry Jello. Trust me it is good too. I am not english I am Italian something wrong with this picture me a tea expert. just kidding. Lets ask HappyS about teas he is from United Kingdom. they are the real experts.
Oh yes Chi tea is very good tea hot also flavor is wonderful too. I have a special tea pot to make my tea in. I got it from hsn or qvc. it is the proper way to brew tea. You empty the bags into the strainer and pour the boiling water over the tea and wait for a few min. and it does taste better that way not bitter ever. Someone shut me up lol.
I got this wonderful tea chest from once again qvc or hsn. it is full of special teas some I never here of but they have a great tast too. I will give you the names if you are interested. The chest is made of wood and it has over 90 tea bags in it all different kinds. The chest keeps the tea fresh even though the bags are in sealed.
I think they were about 25 dollars each I bought some for christmas gifts and a tea pot like mine for friends. They loved the gift.
I also bought this tea flower you put this pod into the pot and pour boiling water over it and the pod opens up into a beautiful flower and it make great tea too.
That is it sorry for blabbing lol
Love you all

Oh Dolly! I need to find that tea chest! My family its scotch/english and we love tea! Growing up in the south made it even worse! I love my tea! I love apple cider, and hope I can drink it this fall. Fresh, farm made . Oh, I'm salivating! I'm finding myself being extremely hungry. I don't want to gain a ton of weight, ineed to get HappyS to give some recipes. I need really flavorful foods so I'm not getting up in the middle night and eat. I'm so hungry!

Hi Mare - I like tea too, and I love to make iced tea with Red Zinger. Also the orange and spice variety hot with a touch of honey. I drank my dinner last evening while the 7 people at the table with me were eating salad and chicken marsala. Since I had a tooth pulled on Monday I was still on a soft diet. I brought one of those Campbell's soup in hand (cream of chicken) and had the chef put it in the microwave for me. Since I washed it down with 2 screwdrivers it was OK! LOL Hugs to all - Marge

Mare you are quick to say the tea bags we cannot get off of talking about bags. funny lol.

Hrcamacho send me a private message with your address and I will get you a tea chest. A love gift from me to you. Really I want to get you one. Lets say you started this tea party and you are the hostess a hostess always gets a gift. I will be waiting for your address.

oh yes i will get recipies out to all of you. no jane I have not tried the constant comet. I will get some thanks so much.
Hey I have a great recipe for rice soup it easy and good.
Here we go
RED RICE SOUP.
cook a small bag of white rice
Drain add swansons chicken broth from box or can.
pour enough to go 4 inches above the rice.
Get some Ragu traditional Sauce small bottle is fine. (this is the only time I use bought pasta sauce I always make home made)
Take about 7 tablespoons of the RAGU in broth and rice
I use Wyles chicken powder or the new swansons chicken flavor packs.
One pack of the powder or teaspoon or two packets fo the swansons chicken flavor packets.
stir it all together and heat it up a bit and garnish with the fresh grate cheese.
If you want you can add a can of peas that are drained well we like it both ways.
Fast easy and good
the rice will soak up the broth just add more chicken broth and a little more sauce. the sauce is very thin in the soup just adds flavor.
If you want you can do it the hard way and make chicken stock. a meatless sauce and do it the old fashion way.
I am for the fast way because it is close to the old fashion way.
My sweet mother in law made it the old fashion way.
This is one of my recipies from Luchie's Cucina my cook book

I have a side salad with this and some garlic bread and bingo a great little meal
Enjoy with a glass of wine
Love Dolly

Sounds delicious Dolly.. Can't wait to try it one of these cold days when I want something hot and sit to watch a movie!!
Garlic bread...yuuuummmmyy.. Just like bacon.. it goes with everything!!! lol
Thank you!!

Didn't think we could eat salads. Or is that just early post op? I know things are swollen so much. What do you have on your salads? I miss my mushrooms! Oh and my tomatoes! I grew up on a farm, and not eating fresh items is frustrating, not to mention weight building :P. Dolly, I sent you a friend request. You don't have to purchase anything for me although it's very appreciated. I'll send you my postal address and we can become pen pals! :)

Holly - I avoid salads, raw vegetables, and gassy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and of course no corn. If I eat tomatoes I make sure I remove the skin first. Also find pasta difficult to chew enough to make a paste of it. Eat a lot of peanut butter - on English muffins, crackers, sandwiches, or sometimes just by the spoonful! Proteins are pretty limited to chicken or fish or hamburger. Don't eat steak. Sounds pretty limited, but I have not had any blockages and don't want any.

Hugs from Marge

Hrmacho I can eat salads now. But I take the skins off the tomatoes. So far I have not tried mushrooms. I had trouble with them before my surgery and am afraid to try. Maybe if they are cut up real small or like in cream of mushroom soup. From what I have read they keep swelling after you eat them. So be careful with mushrooms. My advice is try a salad but a very small one. If you try tomatoes peel them. I have to peel fruit too. I don't eat a lot of fruit some times watermelon or a peach. Occasionaly an apple but peeled. xox terri

Hi all..
With my 26 year old ileostomy.. my short gut syndrome.. compromised kidney.... I eat everything and anything.. in moderation and chew..chew..chew. The one thing I was told, was NO SHELL FISH! I could not believe that.. I suffered crohn's disease for so many years of my life..45 years to date.. that I eat anything I want now .. Tested it all. The best thing is beginning with the prep of food.. slice, dice, shred, grate... help our digestive systems work a little easier if part of the breakdown is already done.

Terri.. I even eat mushrooms.. both cooked with onions for steak and also raw in a salad.. Never had a problem.. I will see them on their "exit".. but that's ok.. I enjoyed eating them!!

As for the shell fish, lobster and shrimp... I have to really pay attention to my chewing.. it takes a long time to eat it!!!! Plus.. I drink with my meal, which helps keep it moving and not back up.

Post op eating is critical to be careful with... staying within the recommended foods.
In the beginning.. it's best to wait several months..then start intoducing new foods, one at a time and in small amounts to see how the body reacts. I've heard stories of people giving up lettuce and stuff... it does increase the output a bit.. but worth it every now and again. I've had family and friends tease me and say.. "You are the only person we know who S&%$# in technicolor!!" Because of the short gut syndrome.. many of my foods are identifiable in my pouch anyway.

Probably differs with a colostomy.. or an ileostomy that has not had a lot of the small intestine removed already.

Happy and safe eating!

Mare - I read somewhere on this site not to eat potatoes (like Betty Crocker scalloped in a box) or mushrooms that have been freeze dried - because they raise cain with your ostomy when they are reconstituted. I had scalloped potatoes once, thought I chewed them very well, and they still came out in chunks and caused a big blow-out of my barrier. Maybe there is some truth to that. I have never tried them again, but I can eat french fries, pan-fried potatoes, sweet potatoes and sweet potato fries, and of course, baked and mashed with no trouble. Hugs from Marge

I just got in from the gym. You girls made my day!!!!!! That was like watching A sit com on television without the visuals. I can just picture all of you sitting at a table talking about tea bags Mare that was a classic. About @#$%^&* in technocolor !!!!!!! God Bless you all HOCKEY
