Redness and burning

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I last wrote, been doing pretty good until last week. Had some leakage and the skin around my stoma (recessed, really just a hole in my belly) is red and burning. Going to change frist thing in the morning and looking for advice. Used the powder and crusting twice now, but wondering if anything else is better. Met an old retired nurse today who gave me some calmoseptine ointment samples (pink stuff) and some of that silver guaze stuff. Anyone tried those? She said the wafer may not want to stick if i use them - sounds bad for that! Heard about calamine lotion on here too - is that the same? WIll it help heal? If you have used these items, how did it work for you and were you able to stick your wafer good? Have an appt Tuesday with an ostomy nurse so at least I should have some help there. Also been using sample appliances so maybe haven't found the best one, yet. Any thoughts? Thank you!

i've had some redness and burning occasionally myself. I've used calendula with success and have actually even used that thick "diaper rash" ointment with success. Of course, you have to be careful and not put it where you need the adhesive to stick. When I have burning or skin rash directly around my stomas, I enlarge the opening in my pouch for a while so I can "doctor" the rash and the appliance still stick. i have discovered that what generally causes the rash is the same thing that causes diaper rash -- it is something I have eaten that is acidic OR the feces or dampness is staying on my skin too long. Folks on here have all kinds of good suggestions about types of pouches and how to handle these issues. I'm still pretty new to it all and experiment constantly about what will work for me. I do not have access to an ostomy nurse so this site has been VERY helpful and I "google" like crazy when I run into a new challenge.

what kind of tape do you use the tape i use works really good its called hy tape and its water proof and also if the stoma gets irritated than use the powder

This is so helpful. I've been getting terrible burning the past 2 days... I'm going to the doctor today since I had an appointment anyways but I had no idea what to do for the burning - except cleaning the area. I think I have been eating way too much acidic stuff. Any other items how to help the burning?

When I get burning or itching, I apply Cortisone Plus just around the stoma, wafer still sticks and then during the day when I detach the bag, I wipe the stoma area, and then apply more Cortisone Plus with a Q tip just around the stoma...in one day, two at the most, I am as good as new! Have a happy day and hope all goes well for you...Laurie

Well now i have fever and diarriah.... :(

Let's hope the new bag sticks and the lotion helps for sure!

Repeating my advise to Sheeba1of3 on October 12, 2012, and advice to Marjorie-Ann on August 6, 2012, I use microbicides to kill any yeasts, skin bacteria, fecal bacteria and funguses that could aggravate an immune system response around my stoma. In particular, I religiously apply a providone-Iodine (Betadine®) microbicide around the entire skin area surrounding the stoma including the stoma covered by the barrier. I dry it using a hair blower until the microbicide is slightly tacky, and then then apply a thin layer of an antiseptic wound gel, e.g. Anasept®) <http://www.anacapa-tech.net/products/anasept-antimicrobial-skin-wound-gel/ > over the same area and again dry with the hair blower until slightly tacky before I fit an Eakin® seal around my stoma and mount a convex wafer barrier, for securing a vented disposable pouch, I use CONVEX-IT® Barriers and disposable vented pouches from ConvaTec®.

The bottom convex seal of barrier protrudes into the stoma opening forcing the stoma to protrude out the hole in the seal into a top concave cavity of the seal. I use a 3 inch wide elastic ostomy belt hooked onto the loop tabs on opposite sides of the disposable pouch to hold the convex seal of the barrier in the stoma hole. I get 5 to 7 days wear before having to change out a wafer barrier.

I eliminated skin reactions to the adhesive annulus anchoring the wafer around my stoma by taping a larger annular layer of hypoallergenic paper tape (available from Kendall®) onto the skin around my stoma and then mounting and securing the wafer on the tape surface around my stoma. [See my Journal Post June 28, 2011 for a more detailed description.]

I am a colostomate and my stoma occasionally recesses into my belly below the opening responsive to peristalsis, the series of autonomous wave-like muscle contractions that moves food and generated gas through the digestive tract.

hi sammie,.i on occasion in the past have suffered with redness and soreness around my stoma, and i was advised to use calomine lotion..it works really well at healing the skin,.just make sure you dont apply too much to the skin, just a thin layer and allow it to dry completely before applying the flange..i always have a bottle of lotion in..for if and when i need it :) x

Thank you, everyone - i am feeling better today! Used the lotion and then the crusting method under the new wafer yesterday. I have not felt much stinging - hoping it is a good sign! And, the fever has passed and theand loose stools are better, too! I will see my surgeon and and ostomy nurse on Tuesday and look forward to hearing their thoughts and suggestions (esp concerning reversing).
