Rash help

I went to the Dr. on Wednesday because I started getting a rash on the inside of my elbow and on the palms of my hands . Little bumbs that turned into blisters. He felt I must of gotten something working out in the yard like poison ivy. Gave me a shot for the itching and sent me home. So today Thursday I feel my bag is pulling away from my skin around 3:00am. So hop in the shower and remove my bag. Once out of the shower and applying my new pouch I see it. Little bumpy blisters all under the pouch the whole 5 inch square tape. Also the skin around the stoma is weepy bleeding icky. So I crust on put on a new bag. 20 min later that pouch is not sticking. So I have to remove it and work to get all the adhesive pasteoff. It is so sore under there I can barely stand it. So far I have not have any thing pass so do not know if this bag will stay stuck. I pray it does. I tried doing some crusting on the skin around the adhesive bandaid 5 in square cause of the blisters. I hope it stays put cause I dont think I can stand to touch the skin under there again. Thank you for listening It is nice to have you to talk to cause unless you have been through it you just dont understand. So now it is 6:00am and no sleep. I think tomorrow is going to be a lazy day. The bumps on my hand and elbow are going away pretty fast so hopefully under the pouch will clear up fast to.

Do you have an ostomy nurse you can call for help? Those blisters where your pouch is attached to you can be a real problem. Contact herbsgal70. She has had those blisters too. Perhaps she can tell you what to do.

That's awful, as Alan said call your nurse there must be some kind of preparation that will calm the skin. Adhesive remover is a must for getting wafers off without damaging the skin.

Jane, I'm sorry. When I wrote my first response I had read your post but failed to see it was written by you. I'm ususally a little more observant than that. Of course, you know Marge as I do. Write her a message and see if she knows how to help you. She wrote me this morning telling me she would be on the golf course today so it may take a little while for her to respond.

Hi Jane - I read your post and Alan's reply. I had the same problem with sore, weepy skin - it only cleared up - pretty fast - when I consulted with a WCON at a local wound care facility. She gave me some special stomahesive powder that had some kind of silver in it that helped with quick healing - also determined that I was using a 1 1/4 opening barrier and it should have been 1 1/8. Since changing size and using that powder I have cleared up to the point that I can just use a barrier wipe - no powder at all - before I apply the barrier. So nice to see clear skin. Hope you can find some relief. Hugs from Marge

Marge, so glad you responded here. I told Jane about your troubles and thought you might be able to help. I suggested she contact you and in my email to you I suggested that you contact her. I was so glad to see your post here.
Blessings,
Alan

I did go to a WOCN before the blisters because I had some red spots real close to the stoma. She also said I needed a 1/4 inch smaller opening because the stoma had shrunk some more. I have a 3 month supply so can not change the size till November. She said it would be ok and showed me how to put the Ekin seal on so it covered that area better. This other rash I have I havent been in to see the nurse. So far this bag is staying on. So I probably wont be able to see her till Wed. so hope my crusting works and It will be better by then. She only see patients on Wed. and Fridays. I don't think I will go today because I am super tired and I dont think I can stand to have the bag taken off so soon. I can always go to the ER if things get worse. That is where the WOCN works out of the hospital. Thanks for the feedback. Marge I did ask her about a sulpher powder and she didn't seem to know what that was. I remembered that is what you said you had used. I just reread your post and it is silver not sulpher no wonder she didn't know any thing about it.Thank you guys and Marge have a good day golfing.

tjane - you are most welcome - and hope you get some relief from everything real soon. Don't understand why you have a rash on other parts of your body - if it doesn't go away I would consult a dermatologist. Do you get the impression that our only entertainment is going to see doctors? LOL Hugs from Marge

Dr said it was something I got out in the yard but I am not so sure. How did it get under my bag. I was wearing clothes and didn't touch that skin under my pouch. The rash on the inside elbow and palms of my hands are going away. Maybe it two different things. I think I want some new entertainment beside Dr. lol

I always say that my social life consists of doctor appointments and test appointments. How boring! Actually, it's not so bad. I like my life.

Some things that you get on your skin can spread other parts of body. Sounds like you had hives of some sort with a contact reaction. I have Crohn's so what I have found is a irritation in one part of my body will cause irritation around stoma. Do you have a special pharmacy near you. I have one with advance wound care and they sale ladocaine type gel that I can put on the skin after a wafer failure. I put that on and spread lightly around and let the skin breath. It is sold over the counter and doesn't require a perscription. Then I am all numbed up and I can clean and change my system incomfort. Argles powder is a powder bandage with silver in it. I use that as art of crusting. The stoma adhessive powder and 3m Cavillon spray. Do you wear a belt because a belt could help system stay snigger against the skin. I have peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum so I know how pain blisters or ulcers can get. I just know if I don't use the silver powder with stoma adhessive powder for the crust my skin gets more irritated which means more likely to breakdown or breakout. Sorry you are in pain and hope it clears up quickly.

hope you are feeling better and better fast!

such good information here from everyone. the only thing i'd add is that it might have been, and still be, a good idea to take some benedryl to get the allergic reaction down so your body can start to heal. it makes me drowsy when i take it so i do it at night - helps calm the allergic reaction and i get a good nights sleep!

i made a note of the silver powder... sounds like something good to have on hand. i have allergies - pollen, weeds, grasses, mold, mildew - so i experience rashes from time to time myself. in fact lately i am having trouble keeping the general itchiness under control - on arms, face, around taped edge of wafer especially. i'm thinking i need to hydrate more so i am trying to drink lots of water, taking vitamin B complex and E. wondering if anyone has any other good ideas to alleviate dry, itchy skin. seems like it is more persistent since having my colostomy... anyone else think so?

again, wishes for fast recovery for you, tjane. sorry it happened and thanks for sharing your experience. we never know what someone else might gain from our stories!

WyoJane I also have Crohns for close to 40 years so maybe it has something to do with that. It is the first time I have had a rash like that. The WOCN also said to get NEXCARE an over the counter spray to help crusting. I believe it is a spray bandage. I have not been to the Pharmacy to check it out yet. I also have some ladicaine didn't even think about using it. Mine comes in a tube and is kind of a clear gel. I may try that next time if I am still so sore. Thank you all for all the great ideas. I am so happy for this site because I feel the only ones that truly understand and can give advice is if you have a ostomy or are a care giver of an ostomy. You can explain to family and friends and they just don't quite get it.Thanks for the help and I will give you an update. I hope to be able to keep this bag on till Sunday or longer if I don't feel anything brewing under there. Grateful for the handy tips. terri jane

I'm overwhelmed about how much information one person can learn here.
Now I know what I should have in store.

Hi Sheri - are you facing surgery - or have you just had it? Mine was such a surprise - I had never heard of an ileostomy, let alone a perforated colon - 9 months later I am pretty used to it. Whatever you are facing you will find some wonderful caring people on this site - we are the "Inspire family" out to help, commiserate, pray for you, whatever you need - just ask! Hugs from Marge

Sheri I am so sorry you have no insurance. I am surprized Medicare turned you down. Maybe it has to do with your age recieving Medicare. I live in Ten. and they have insurance for people that have no insurance. Although they are very picky who can qualify but ten years ago it was pretty easy to recieve the Ten Care. Does your state have any thing like that? I am not knowledgable about insurance and pre existing conditions but maybe someone on this site may be able to help you.

I'm in Fl. doing the research for insurance. I got an tip from this site for an web site
www..pcip.gov

Unless you are 65 you are not eligable for Medicare. You can qualify for Medicade, maybe. People with disabilities qualify for Medicade.
Blessings,
Alan

You also qualigy for medicare and medicaid if you are on dissability and not 65.
