leaks

I'm having trouble with my skin barriers never had this trouble before I can't get my skin barrier under the side discharge on my stoma it's like they are to thick. I went through five barriers today. I've been using Hollister for two years now with no troubles till now. My skin is so sore from the leaks and changing the barriers. Does anyone have any suggestions on fifteenth barriers or what to do. I use the rings I've even cut them down and flattened them down so they would be thinner but didn't help maybe try some paste. I'm about ready to snap the closest ostomy nurse is 175 miles away

i get leakage to you may be cutting the hole big or maybe the size keeps going up and down i would measure it with the measuring
stensil that comes in the box when you get your hollister supplies. its just a matter of cutting the wafer to the right size hope this helps

Yeah I tried that today its still 1 3/8. And I'm doing chemo at the moment I have had trouble after chemo but never like this I think I got it now used a barrier out of a different box and tried the paste so far no leaks. Maybe I just had a bad box of barriers.

Nope skin barrier number six a months worth in one day got four left and don't look like this one is going to hold either don't have clue what I'm going to do I have never had this problem ever like this

Perhaps while your skin is super sensitive, use Nexcare waterproof tape to go around the wafer. Also ,temporarily, an ostomy belt could be used too .Go to Youtube to see this demonstrated. (Just search "ostomy belts, and you will see people demonstrate) BUT in the meantime you can use an ace bandage, wrap it around the wafer, all around your back (like a belt, but thicker) and cut a hole for the stoma to poke out. Perhaps, because of your chemo, your stoma output is more acidy and that can cause leaks because it is irritating the skin. Of course changing your brand may very well help. Maybe taking pepto bismal can neutralize the output too. But check with doc. You probably need to check with WCON though. There are meds used to help heal the skin.

Just to add, Search this site (top right of home page) for "leaks around stoma" to see what others have done. You can call your wafer company (convatec ,hollister). I believe they have nurses who can speak with you and perhaps send samples of some new things to try, since you live so far from your Ostomy nurse.

Hi scooby - We moved 2 months ago, and I had to change more than 9 times in a week - resulting in weepy sores which prevented a good seal on the barrier - which in turn was letting "stuff" leak under it, causing sores - well, you get the idea - it is viscious circle. I consulted with a WCON and she pointed out that the opening in my barrier was only 1/8" too big, but that small amount made a big diffrerence. She also introduced me to the Convatec convex Natura 2-piece barrier and drainable pouch, and Eakin rings. She told me to stretch the Eakin ring to fit the stoma and snug it right up against the stoma before applying the barrier. Always use an adhesive removal wipe to take off the barrier, and if you have sores use Stomahesive powder to form a crust over the sores. It is important to use a skin prep wipe to pat the powder to completely moisten it so it does not have any dry spots of powder which would prevent the barrier sealing well. I used to use Hollister, with paste, and found that the past deteriorated rather quickly, in addition to being messy to deal with. Now, after 3 days, which is when I change everything, the Eakin ring is intact and has prevented leakage onto my bare skin, which is all I have now. Still use the skin prep wipe first, though and wait for it to thoroughly dry before applying the ring and barrier. Lastly she told me to just relax and hole my hand over everything for at least 20 minutes to warm everything and guarantee a good seal. Hope this explanation has been of some help - keep working with an WCON until everything gets cleared up.

I was having leaks to and found out my stoma had shrunk another 1/4 inch. So that was part of the problem. The other was I got a dip in the skin so the WOCN told me to use both the ring and the paste. Another trick I do that realy seemed to make a difference is I dry my skin with the hairdryer after my shower. Then do the skin prep and hair dry it. I also warm the ring before I stretch around the stoma then add paste and hit that with the hairdryer till it is not tacky. Last but not least I warm the back of the appliance before I put it on. I don't know but I stopped having leaks when I started using the hairdryer. Maybe that will help you. I also do some crusting if I have any sore spots. Hope this helped. I learned the hairdryer trick from some one on this site. They used it to dry off the skin so I took it further and used the hair dryer for everything. It has worked for me. Hope this helps. xox terri

Thanks for all of the advice I think my problem is I gained weight tomarrow going to try some convex skin barriers now it seems like I got a dip around my stoma today when I got my chemo pump unhooked had a nurse look at it she thought it would be a good idea to try since most of my discharge come out of the side of my stoma instead of the front of it my barriers block half of the output on the side and its going under the barrier. So hopefully the convex barriers well solve my problem.

Thanks,
Jon

Hello,

I have an odd suggestion which I found worked for me, but have you ever tried not using the rings or paste and just have the waifer on with out anything under it? I found that the waifer which is Hollister convatex works really well and do not have to use the rings or paste at all. Also the belt works very well. Having sore skin does not help the waifers stick to the skin so in the interum while you are healing use the powder.

I hope you can find something that works for you.

Always
JRo

Hi All - when you use the stomahesive powder be sure to pat it with a skin prep wipe until it is completely wet - and then let it dry before applying the barrier. If you have any dry powder the barrier will not stick in that spot. I found that Allcare skin prep wipes do the best job for me - as well as the Allcare Adhesive Removal wipes. There are so many different brands out there, and you will probably get recommendations from others on here.

if the leak it in the same area most the time I am betting it is from the dip from maybe gaining or loosing weight. I fill in just the dip with a piece of eakin seal than put on the appliance just a trouble shooting suggestion Good Luck

Finally no more leaks got Hollister convexed skin barriers. They did the trick and got some samples from convatec of their moldable convexed barriers. Going to try them out next time I got to change. Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions

Jon
