Gas

Does anybody else have problems with gas in the bag at night. No matter what I do I get so much gas it causes a breakout. I would appreciate any help out there.

I have gaas all the time. My wife is extreemly thankful for the bags. The filters don't work worth....... I burp mine before bed and thankfully I wake up at least a couple of times a night and burp then as needed. Watch out for foods that cause gas. You can find lists on several sights covering illeostomy diets. Try not to eat these for a while close to bed time. Lot's of luck. Dan

I don't have gas at night especially but from time to time it does occur. I put osto ez vents on all my pouches. This way anytime that the pouches fill with gas you can open up the vent and release it.

I use the e-z vents too. Very convienant to bad it doesn't get rid of the stinky smell too. Have you tried using gas x or beano to reduce the gas. If my bag gets full of air during the night it usualy wakes me up before having a blow out. I wouldthink the gas x might be helpful if you haven't tried it yet.

GAS TROUBLE I have gas 24/7 and enough to fill a hot air balloon!!! I take multiple gas caps all day, I have tried to track foods, nothing found. My bag, especially at night, has so much gas in it that I fear it is going to explode. I have been put on antibiotics and that takes a lot of the gas away but I cannot take them forever.
I have an appointment in a couple of weeks at the medical center's ostomy department and this is going to be one of the problems I hope to discuss with them.

Keep us posted.

I wake up between 3 and 4 every morning to what looks like a party balloon. LOL I empty that and go back to sleep, being careful to hold the end of the pouch toward the ceiling as I unroll it - sometimes I burp the air out before I open the bottom. Sometimes it is not really blown up, and i don't really remember what I ate or didn't eat that kept it down. Tried Beano and Gas-Ex, but they did not seem to help, so I just live with it. I haven't had a night-time blowout since I switched from Hollister to Convatec supplies - they seem to be very efficient - and I found that changing them every 3 days is a must for me.

Marge I love convatec! I get a ton of gas and wake up with a balloon too but dont have a blow out! I have a colostomy not ileostomy so I get 7 day wear out of the appliance. Now that I have started changing the pouch, I feel so much cleaner and I am used to changing it so it does not hurt at all! I learned how to change it due to the wonderful people on this site:))

Kerri

nothing like rolling over in the night on an "air balloon"! I get up quietly and go to the bathroom to release the gas and light a candle for a bit. Hopefully, I won't blow myself up!

Hi Kerri - do you run a tiny bead of lotion around the rim of the barrier when you change? It makes the pouch snap right on - tip a WCON gave me several months ago - it really, really works!

Yes , no matter if I eat early or late, gas seems a chronic problem throughout the daytime as well! I too would appreciate a remedy.

I have a remedy that has worked for me. I take a probiotic every day. I had the same problem. My bag would inflate really bad. especially at night. Have had several blowouts because of this. I know the probiotic works because one week when I prepared my weekly medication in my little organizer box I forgot the probiotic. I began to have the gas problem couldn't imagine What was happening until I discovered the omission. Rectified it and the problem went away again. Try it. Won't hurt if it doesn't help. Give it a few days and see what happens. The one I use is 10,000 units.
Let me know if it helps your problem.

Hi dixiewest - I keep a can of Febreeze Air in each bathroom and give it a squirt after I empty "Buddy". It works very well - don't think I would want to be lighting candles at 4 in the morning!

By the looks of your profile pic we have something in common....besides the obvious...LOL. I have horses and dogs too. I get a chuckle out of the discussions about gas because I've had the bag so blown up that if it went I'd be flying around the room backwards!!! LOL. I find it doesn't hinder my riding or other barn activities, though. Because I won't let it. What kind of horses do you have?

Suade, I have an "old grey mare" Appaloosa that we rescued. Poor thing is a lot like me, arthritic and tired out so I don't ride her much but she is a dear sweet thing and sometimes forgets how old she is. A bit on the stubborn side too which makes her even more like me.
The dog is also a "rescue" from a neighbor that couldn't afford to keep him. Loyal as the day is long. Funny, these two don't seem to mind my imperfections or my gas! LOL
Nope, Suade, I agree. These medical challenges will only stop us from "living" if we let them. Mine have honestly slowed me down more in the last 3 years than ever before but I'm determined to find my "bounce back" soon.

Suade and dixiewest - I am with you - my mind says 40, but my body says 80. I get so frustrated that I can't do all the things I used to, but I don't use a walker or cane like so many here in south Florida who are even younger than me, and I can still play some golf. They can't keep an old broad down! LOL

Marge - you would fit right in with my horse group, the Old Broads Riding Club....LMAO. Good attitude. Next time I'm in Florida maybe we can get together. I was there in March this year with a friend of mine who took me with her to visit her parents. That was just before I started losing my hair to the chemo. I called it the "farewell to the hair tour". LOL. The day I got home we cut it off and I've bought several different wigs that I love. So easy to do my "hair" now!!

DixieWest - I too have an appaloosa and have always loved the breed. Mine is a 4 year old and just in the terrible teens...LOL. He's solid bay but registered app. I have a pinto/paint gelding that I've had for most of his 17 years and a buckskin gelding, the one in the picture that is 12 and I've had him since he was 5 months old. I board 3 other horses here too. We have 7 little dogs, some of which are rescues. I don't know what I'd do without my animals. They keep us going. With the chemo this last year and the neuropathy I have in my feet and legs now I think I went from 63 to 83 in the matter of a few months. However.......you play the hand you're dealt and I'm still alive and able to ride and take care of my horses and house. I have a colostomy, cancer, no hair and numb feet but I also have my sense of humor about it all. And there are people alot worse off than me. Can I friend you? If I can figure out how...LOL.

Hi Suade - just let me know when you are in Florida - where do you go usually? Is it anywhere near Delray Beach - or Boca Raton? Would love to meet you, too.

Hugs from Marge

Marge - I don't come down all that often and the only reason I got down this year was because of my new cancer diagnosis and impending treatments so my husband and best girlfriend hoodwinked me into going. Unbeknownst to me he had payed for the whole trip for both of us as well as a surprise horseback ride on the beach, which was on my bucket list. Then he got Kirsten to ask me to come down with her to see her parents, who live near Orlando somewhere..LOL. I didn't want to at first but they double teamed me and I said yes. I should have realized something was up!! It was a nice trip, though. Next time they lie to me and get me down there I will be sure to look you up. You sound like the kind of Old Broad that's right up my alley!!! LOL. I would love to meet you.

Marge,

I do the lotion trick, you told me about that a few months ago and it works great! I was so nervous about just changing the pouch but it is very easy! Thank you!

Kerri

Thanks Kerri - I was happy to learn that trick, too.

Love and hugs from Marge
