easy way to have a clean illeostomy bag everytime u empty

Hi,i had a temp illeostomy for 14 months , now i awaiting my permanant colostomy . I am super into body cleanlinness and wanted to share a very simple tip that i found SOO helpful when i had my illeostomy, perhaps it will help someone. I worked as a nurse assistant for this gentleman that had a illeostomy and he had this water sprayer hooked up to the side of his toilet, that he would spray/rinse his bag evertime after emptying. 5 years later i got my illeostomy and from the idea i got from this guy i would bring a large empty water bottle with me in my big purse and before i would empty my bag i would fill the bottle up,empty the waste and then pour some water in swish it around, massage it and lift up the end of the pouch to get up to the top of the pouch ,i would repeat this 3 times (there was enough water in the big bottle for 3 rinses),then i would shake out the excess water and dry the endof the pouch.i also wore a pouch that was transparent on the side faceing out so i would know that i got it clean.i cant image having stool reside. btw i NEVER had a leak once in 14 months.does anyone have any tips for a colostomy?

I usually use a little dawn or some hand sanitizer and rinse the same way. I use the new convatec bags with the slick liner bag inside. They have a wide opening and everything comes pretty much out. I usually only do two rinses.

I have a hose and sprayer hooked up to the hot water side of the bathroom sink. since it is at the opposite end of the house from the hot water heater the water comes out about 100 degrees. The warm water dissolves the stool in my colostomy bag much better than cold water. If you have a single lever faucet there is a plug under the faucet that a hose can be put right into.

hi , dawn dish soap that sounds good, so i presume u just mix it in with the water?

I spray Pam into the bag when it is new. Everything just slips right out. (I have an iliostomy so it is more liquidy). Plus a ring of pam around the snap part of the flange makes it pop on better and you hear it so you know it is sealed.I have been doing this for 10 years and the Pam has no effect on the bag, other then making the contents slide out better.

Yes, I just put a few drops of dawn and then a cup of water a swoosh and massage it around and the dump it in the toilet bowl. My bathroom is small enough I can reach the sink from the seat and I keep the dawn on the toilet seat. When I need a really shower fresh free I might use the sanitizer drops and squeaky clean. I have had others recommend Pam but I can't use arisol sprays because of my lungs. I try to avoid chemicals though I know the sanitizer gel is highly flammable.

I use a paper cup of water and after emptying, I pour the water in and rinse out my bag. After the rinse, I add another packet of Adapt. I don't use any soap or anthing---to worried about not getting the soap rinsed out. But it is so nice to have a cleaner bag.

I have a colostomy, before my susrgery one year ago I had a "go bedet" hooked up to my toilet, it did a
really good job of keeping my colon clean, after my surgery I ordered a portable hook-up it is like a shower
hose, I was luckly enough to have a cabinet next to my toilet so my son hooked the shower head to the
hose under the toilet and it attaches to the cabinet: I only get cold water but it does a really good job of cleaning my pouch. there is an attachment that can be used to tap into your hot water unde the sink but I did
not feel the expense of getting a plummer to come in and fix it so the cold water is fine and my bag is
always clean. Before I kept a bottle of water by the toilet and risnsed out my pouch that way.You can
check with Lowes as they do carry the "go bedet" (pronounced go beday) French I am told.if not go
on line and find the source: if you are really interedsted I can find the information. I hope this helps.

Wyojane - my WCON gave me a great tip. Before attaching the pouch to your barrier run a drop of hand lotion around the barrier rim. Your pouch will snap on quickly and securely in a second.

I also rinse each time with a plastic bottle, also with warm water and also use Adapt liguid when I am at home. Haven't tried packets as yet ...never had a leak so far. Wonderful to keep your pouch clean. I agree... I can't imagine not doing this! I still use clear bags so I can see what is happening to my friend. Just wish there was not color or staining on paste strips I use around my stoma to keep my skin safe. I do worry about that but when I remove my pouch every three to four days it is not underneath. So I guess I just have to put up with the staining but have a clean pouch otherwise! ;]

Great Picture Lin!!

With my ileostomy.. I don't need to rinse.. it's so watery and high output.. nothing ever sticks!! Just the garlic.. which rinsing wouldn't rid the smell anyway.. Speaking of that.. Think I'll have some pesto that I made last night... with fresh garlic a friend gave me.. yummy

I think, Gemini, you will make the transition from ileostomy to colostomy a breeze!! Keep us posted and especially when your surgery will happen, so we can keep you in or thoughts and prayers that day! Good luck! Thanks for the cleaning tip!

Prayers,
Mare
