Discharge from rectum?

I didn't know where else to put this, so here it is. Is it common to have a discharge from your rectum 3 months after colostomy surgery?

I have not had this happen before today. I was sitting there and all of a sudden I felt an "urge" to have a movement from my rectum. I couldn't hold it in, and when I got to the bathroom, there was a gooey mess. It was sort of snotty looking with a pinkish red tinge to it. What is happening here?

I have had this since my surgery. My surgeon said it's normal and that eventually it will happen less frequently. This happens to me at least twice a week and it's hard to hold in. The rectum naturally produces mucous and if u are not having bm's normally then it will still cause that urge to go and a passing of mucous.
Anyone feel free to jump in and correct me if I'm wrong but this is to the best of my knowledge.

I agree. I have had a discharge of mucus from the rectum ever since the surgery. My surgeon told me it's normal. I didn't even know what it was until she told me. I'm still curious how it happens when there is only an inch or rectum left. I guess the mucus is secreted from that inch.

Alan

Like Alan and the others I too have the discharge. Doctor said it is normal.

Does this discharge happen every day or just every now and then? I just ask because that thing yesterday was the first time, and it happened again this morning. What a way to add insult to injury!

For me, it happens almost every day. Some days more than once. And it does feel like the urge before a bowel movement the old way. But unlike gas before surgery, I can't push it out. If I push, nothing happens.

Alan

yes ...I have had the colostomy for 20 years and there has been times that happens every day and another times nothing happens for months, I ask the Dr and she said it's normal because the glands there keep working...o well, meanwhile it's nothing wrong.

I have a colostomy 10 months and it does not happen often it differs with some.

I have colostomy 18 months; had discharge at first; so much so felt like a big baby with a diaper;it has gradually decreased with time to very little to none now; still get urge for bm once in a while (especially when I have red meat) but I ignore it and it passes...was told especially right after the surgery not to "force" any feelings of bm while my body was healing from the surgery.

I have had my colostomy for 4 weeks and have had 2 bm's from my rectum which were mucus and a small amout of stool. My doctor said to expect this as normal. Seems like both times it happened when I had not had a bm for several days.

Hey Alan - I, too, have that discharge - mostly in the morning when I awake. Like you, if I push nothing happens. I insert a glycerin suppository first thing in the morning and it works in about 15 minutes, passing what is there, and relieving the uncomfortable feeling I usually wake up. Doctor said they would do no harm, as they are not medicine of any kind. Once in a while I have that feeling later in the day, resulting in a general logy feeling until I pass it with another suppository. OMG - we sound like the Florida "snowbirds" in the winter here - several of them can be sitting at a table near us loudly discussing their ills and ailments - a real appetizing atmosphere! We say "Welcome to Florida - now go home" We actually cheer in the spring when we see a car carrier full of license plates from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachussetts, etc.! God bless and hugs - Marge

Normal, I had it for six months, its mucus that's made, stopped when they took out and closed rectum. The rectum muscles dont work unless I just try to see if there still are there.
