CRAMPING

Hello friends,
Lately I have been dealing with cramps, feeling constipated. I have used suppositories but they did not relieve much. I had very little output. I worry about this as I do not want to get myself in a positon where it becomes serious or impacked. Have any of you experience this?
thanks,

Hi Kristin,

In theory this is not possible with an ileostomy. I have had a couple of occasions when for no reason everything stopped for a day and then started again.

I get cramps if I'm getting dehydrated (that and a slight headache are the first signs for me) If massage hot baths and rocking does not move it I'd advise you to call your Doctor. Problem with things like suppositories is that they can make the gut lazy so nothing works without them. Anyway, don't leave it call and talk to a Stoma specialist.

Sorry, I dont knw about ileostomy, I have colostomy but what I use is grape juice and that seems to help!

I keep raisins and prunes around. They seem to help me the most.

I never get cramps or feel constipated. My only problem seems to be the thickness (or lack there of) of my output. Right now it is totally liquid. Before the day is over it will be about the consistancy of applesauce again. I have no idea what causes the change. I don't know what I would advise for constipation since I don't have it. I just felt the need to write.
Blessings,
Alan
P.S. Mark Nelson, it's good to see your post. It's been awhile.

Cramping and feeling constipated could be from many things. It could be adhesion's, or any number of things. If it persists you may want to call your Dr and get it checked out.

It is not very often that one with an ileostomy ever has constipation, maybe a blockage. Drink lots of liquids, soak in a warm tub of water, massage the lower abdomen. A warm compress over the lower abdomen may be of help also.

If it persists have it checked out. My personal rule of thumb is if it has lasted for 24 hours get help. It can be less then 24 hours depending on the severity of the cramping.

Be good to you

Lois

Kristen,

What have you eaten and how long have you had the cramping and low output? I assume by cramping you mean abdominal. If so, you could have a blockage or partial blockage. Drink plenty of water and warm tea. Massage your abdomen and take a warm bath. If the pain and low output last more than 24 hours, call the doctor.
