Bleeding

AS you all know, I'll be 3 weeks post OP tomorrow. Day before yesterday I started bleeding from my hind end. Not a lot, just mucus tinged pink. Since everything is gone, left with the anus stump, I'm a little concerned. I has no pain there until Tuesday. Like i said, not a lot, but am very uncomfortable. Did anyone else have this? Is it normal?

Hello, I had the same thing happen to me. The surgeon advised me that I had proctitis which is inflammation of the rectum (mucus means there is inflammation). The rectum needs stool to pass through it to remain healthy. When there isn't stool, it can get inflammed. I also had discomfort in that area until my reversal surgery. I was given hydrocortisone suppositories to see if that would help, but for me, it did not seem to. Always good to let your surgeon know what is going on. Hope this helps. Deb

I have never had the problem described here. I did have mucus in the beginning but that has stopped. I am six months post-op. I believe if I were you I would either call my surgeon or my ostomy nurse about the blood. That doesn't sound normal to me. Don't panic. It's probably nothing. But I would check it out if I were you.
Blessings,
Alan

I had emergency surgery in 2001 to remove perforated colon. Ulcerative colitis. I finally had
my anus and stump removed in Feb. This year. During the 10 years in between I. Have had a lot of rectal bleeding and sometimes pain. I recommend a yearly scope. If I can help please contact me.

9 weeks ago I had the j-pouch formation operation. I experienced mucus and a some blood from my rectum. Now I have very clear discharge at various times throughout the day and at night. I'm assuming this is due to the fact that the rectum still produces this fluid to aid the passing of stools. I would prefer to be able to control this output but I think I'll just have to wear some kind of pad to absorb the fluid. Has anyone else experienced this? Would i just continue to experience this until I have the j-pouch activated? Can anyone recommend any good pads to wear?

Paul, I believe all of us have had this problem. My surgeon told me it was mucus and would eventually diappear. I'm six months post-op and the discharge has stopped. I never used anything to absorb the discharge. There never was that much of it.
There are those pads that women use but I don't know the commercial name of the pad.
Blessings,
Alan

Yes that is normal if it was not for that opening the surgeon left that would stay in your system. As for the time frame of it lasting in depends on your system I had rectal cancer surgery 3yrs ago this Oct It was the results of a small mass on the sphincter muscle.
What my surgeon explained to me it is due to your body still thinking that everything is still in tact in that area. Eventually that discharge will lessen as time goes on. Have you experienced the phantom bowel movement yet??? That believe it or not it can be a very uncomfortable sensation Well good luck and be patient. This is and will be something different these symptoms Thank God we have each other. HOCKEY

I need to use a piece of toilet paper or a pad to soak up the discharge. About 10ml - 15 ml can come out at one time but luckily it's usually when I'm on the toilet emptying my appliance. Occasionally I leak at night, but the last few nights it's been ok. I take it the phantom bowel movement is something quite strange? It's not something I've been advised about, what is it like?

It feels like the urge you used to have before the surgery. It's like phantom pain in a limb that is no longer there. It's basically in your head but feels real. If it happens, it won't happen for long. It's your body trying to do what it has been trained to do. It has to be retrained with time and it will finally go away.
I hope this is right. Is there anybody else out there who can answer this question better than I?
Blessings,
Alan

Thanks for your reply Alan. I know a little more of what to expect.

Yes Alan, you are right it will go away in time. It is amazing how our minds work, it is still an uncomfortable sensation I have been awoken a few times in the first 18months after my surgery If you are dealing with these two symptoms BE PATIENCE it will lessen over time Just ask God to give you the strength to accept what has happened to you and your family. And he will. Not always on the first try Good luck And God Bless you HOCKEY
