Back in hospital again

Hi everyone,
I'm still having a tough time with this ileostomy. Finally got the horrible skin under control when they switched me to a convatec. Then started feeling yucky over the weekend. Abd pain/nausea, couldn't eat much. Thought it was my gastroparesis. Friend said I should call dr. Called and they sent me to ER. After tests, I have another partial obstruction and am back in the hospital. It's only been 4 weeks since surgery, is it that common to have blockage problems like this?
Thanks everyone!! Appreciate prayers for quick healing!

Bam the only real blockage I got was when I was still in the hospital. They thought it was due to the pain meds slowing everything down too much. The only other problem I had was when I ate too much peanut butter and tomatoes with the skin on. I am glad you called the Dr. to find out what was going on. I have a colostomy and I thought if you had an iliostomy blockages were not too much of a problem cause stuff goes through too fast. Did you eat too much roughage or fiberous foods. Did the Dr. find out what caused the blockage? Hope your stay is short and you are feeling better by now. Keep us informed on your progress. xox terri

Beth,

I'm glad you signed in to let us know how you are doing; I was getting worried. So sorry you are having problems, but it's not unusual in the beginning. People with ileostomies do have trouble with blockages as the type of fiber know as roughage (such as skins from fruits and vegetables, nuts, popcorn hulls, undercooked vegetables, and even heavy starches like potatoes and squash) don't digest and can't get past the muscle wall that the stoma protrudes through. Think of it as trying to push a large whole potato through a drain pipe. The stoma can only expand as far as the muscle will let it. So the blockage could have been from something you ate. Since you didn't tell us that, we can't know for sure.

The other thing at play here is your body is still in shock from the surgery, so it's not cooperating well and might just be sluggish causing what you eat to build up forming a blockage. Your body needs time to heal. Unfortunately doctors push you to eat a "normal" diet to soon. I remember vividly my first experiences after surgery with food causing nausea and cramping and partial blockages when trying to eat what the doctors ordered in the hospital. When I got home from the hospital, I backed off the solid foods and went to creamed soups, pudding, applesauce, and plenty of liquids. I stopped having nausea and cramping, then I started adding foods one at a time to see how well each was tolerated. In the beginning even bananas and mashed potatoes gave me trouble. After a few months I could eat just about anything as long as I limit the amount. If I eat something like popcorn, I only eat a small amount and follow it up with bread or crackers to help push it through.

When I was still in the hospital, my ostomy nurse told me about using peanut butter and crackers to help eliminate a blockage or to help solidify watery output. I've done this for 30 years and have never (knock on wood) had a full blockage; nor have I ever had to take medication to get rid of watery output.

I hope you are better soon. Keep us posted and don't stay away so long and worry us.

Hugs and prayers,

Debbie

Dolly, thank you for the sweet prayer! I'm doing better. Not sure what caused it. It has been very frustrating. I'm hanging in there.

Bam, I've never had a blockage, thank the Lord. A partial, maybe. But the hospital is the best place for you to be right now so you can get this thing under control. I had to go back in the hospital shortly after my surgery because I was dehydrated. I didn't like that much as I'm sure you don't either.
Keep us posted, please. We all want to know your progress.
Blessings,
Alan

Bam - I have never had a blockage (knock on wood!), but I am very careful about what I eat. The only problem I have is controlling my weight because the things I eat are mostly carbs and I am also taking 5mg of Prednisone for polymyalgia rheumatica - similar to fibromyalgia but attacks my joints rather than nerves. I also have Type II Diabetes and that limits what I eat also, so dieting is not an option. I have had my ileostomy since December of last year. Hope you get everything under control. Hugs from Marge

Bam glad you are doing a little better. You should be home in no time. xox terri

Bam my ileostomy is now 7 years old, the first couple of years I had some blockages due to a hernia. I was told scar tissue can also cause blockages. The hernia was repaired and my ileostomy site was changed to a new location. Watching what I eat and chewing it well is my life now. Chewing your food a lot more than you did before ilestomy is very important, you will see improvements.

God Bless You and Your family.

Hello sallyjean - Chewing well is the way to avoid a blockage - combined with what you are chewing! Sometimes my jaw gets tired from all the chewing and I have sometimes not finished what was on my plate because I got tired of chewing. Hugs from Marge

Marge, are you back at the computer or did you never leave?
Blessings,
Alsn

I am back - just watching reruns of my soap operas I missed while at the golf course yesterday - checking up on me? LOL

Yeah!
