anesthesia

HI all!

I had a mediport placed on Tuesday evening. Wednesday I woke up with the shoulder, right sided neck pain. I still have it. Have any of you ever had it and if so how long did it last? Dr said its normal but it has been 3 days now. It hurts worse when I breath in deeply, like that muscular hurt. Thank you!

Chriswife, I am so sorry you are hurting hon. I have not had this done so I cannot help in that area. But I can pray for you to feel better fast. Take care and God bless you

I had no pain with the port - maybe others had this problem. I don't like the way it gets worse when you breath in - insist it's checked out.

Chriswife, I had pain for a while my doctor said its because I didn't have enough fat tissue there. If I remember it lasted for a week than I was fine. I hope yours doesn't take that long. Hockeymom

The discomfort is actually on the opposite side...the pain upon breathing in hurts at the base of my neck on the right side and goes around my shoulder. The port is on the left. Strange, I know

I think you need to get this checked out for your own peace of mind. My son woke up with a pain in his shoulder area after surgery and it was a clot. Please get it checked now.

You need to get this checked out right away. Even though the port itself is placed on the left side, the actual tube that runs from the port into one of your large veins may be on the right side of your neck. Although this is unlikely.
I am a pediatric nurse and on some VERY active children we actually place the port low down almost at their abdomen or up high closer to their backs.
There are many things that could be causing the pain...some minor and some very major. You need to make sure that it is not a clot, make sure that the tubing is still in the vein it was placed in during the surgery, and that there is no collection of air (or an embolus) at the site.
If you are feeling short of breath at all, call 911 and get yourself to an ER stat.
Hopefully it is just some post-op pain.

Thank you for all of the replies! The tube is on the same side as the port, I can see it through my skin...ugh! I am not feeling short of breath at all, as a matter of fact, I have lots of energy. When I breath deep I just feel what is like a muscle strain. I have put a call into the doc, although yesterday I sent her a text and she said it was normal. If I still have it soon, I will go to the ER and see if they find anything...Again, thank you for the advice:):)

Hello all:)

I wanted to let you all know that today I am feeling better. I still have some discomfort, but it is mild. I am doing excercises to loosen everything up If I am not all the way better tomorrow, my oncologist will check me out prior to chemo. Thanks for all of your concern and help:)

Kerri

Thank you so much for letting us know that you are OK. I was thinking about you all day yesterday and hoping that it was just post-op aches and pains.
As a critical care nurse I always think the worst so it is great when things work out just the way they should.
Good luck with chemo. tomorrow.

Lily,

Thank you for thinking about me...I am a bit nervous about tomorrow, it is my first time with the chemo pump! And thank you for your advice, I appreciate it. And if it is something more sinister(which since I am feeling better I doubt it) they will find it tomorrow and I will definitely let you know. Again, I really appreciate the concern, it is great to belong to a group where we all care about each other even though we dont "know" each other

Good luck tomorrow Kerri, I'm sure they wont take any risks so just relax.

with the port once it settles done it is a great thing at first they use to use novicain to help with pain when it went in now I just have them go for it as it does not hurt any worse then getting the novicain it is such a life saver I have had so many tubes and bottles of stuff hung and dripped into the port and it is great I still need a minimum of 4 surgerys a year so they are leaving mine in and I don't mind it will get to the point that you forget you have it and it is a great releif.

We have a cream in Canada called EMLA. You can purchase it at the pharmacy without a prescription and it is a "numbing" cream. You put it over your port (or wherever they are going to poke you). Cover it with a clear dressing (op site) and leave it there for 20 min - 1 hour. It totally numbs the site and you don't have to endure the pinch and sting of local anaesthetic.
We go through gallons of it at the Children's Hospital where I work.
