Adhesive Removal Wipes

Being two months post surgery, I'm still getting the lay of the land in the ostomy stuff. I'm wondering if there is a better adhesive remover than the Hollister 7760 Universal Removal Wipe. I use an Eakin Slims seal with a Convatec Sur-Fit Natura two piece bag. The adhesive remover just seems to smear the adhesive residue around rather than disolve and remove it.

The remover wipes I was sent are pretty much good for nothing as well. The ones I liked were samples of "All-Care" Adhesive Remover Wipes that i received as samples when i left the hospital, and they really dissolved the leftover stickiness. I have been getting my supplies through Shield, and they do not carry the All-care products. They sent me what is more like a baby wipe.... Very gentle for cleaning around the stoma, but no way an adhesive remover.

I use the Allkare product which is a trade name of ConvaTec. I also use the Eakin slims rings which are also a ConvaTec product. The wafer I use is the same as yours, but I have not had a problem with the Eakin ring which seems to almost completely come off when I peel the wafer off with the help of the adhesive remover and after washing with soap and warm water. Are you using anything else on the skin besides a skin prep, before putting your wafer on?

I like the Allkare from Convatec also. I think they are better thab the Hollister removal wipe. AllKare also has a nice citrus orange smell to them.

I use a wipe called UNI-SOLVE that I purchased at a medical supply store here. They have some isopropyl alcohol in them, and seem to do a decent job. I almost always follow that up with a shower with a no-lotion soap (Irish Spring). I use the Convatec convex wafer with a 2" Eakin ring - and everything comes off when I remove the wafer.

Hugs to all,
Marge

Thanks Folks. So far it's looking as though the "All-Care" Adhesive Remover is my next bet. My local supplier here in Chattanooga, "The Pouch Place", carries Convatec products so they should have the "All-Care" Adhesive Remover. I'll give it a try. Thanks again.

"All Care " worked okay for me in removing the adhesives. What I didn't like about it was it ruined my nail polish....ok, I'm vain. Someone recommended Medi-Sol Adhesiver Remover wipes. "No harsh solvents" "Safe and non-toxic" "Natural citrus aroma" Non-irritating" "Biodegradable" "No artificial dyes, colors, frangrances." And I can add, doesn't melt nail polish. My insurance covers it without a problem. I think the web site is "organge-sol.com"

Due to moving several times I have had to go to numerous Osteo nurses and was told by all of them not to use adhesive removers. Wash the area with a mild soap like Ivory and to make sure that the area is clean. This will make sure that the appliance seals.

I'm not having any problems with sealing. It's just that the remaining Eakin seal residue, usually a thin coating around the stoma, prevents me from shaving properly to get rid of the hair sufficiently. I don't expect to need to shave close but some of this hair is getting to be about a half inch long and tangled with the adhesive residue. Being an engineer causes me to want to keep things neat and clean and this residue is making me crazy...to a limited degree.

I'm only using the skin prep so far. Have had no problems with skin irritation. Although, this residue build up and the additional wiping with these Hollister wipes are making me nervous that the prolonged use of the alchol based wipes may eventually cause irritation.

I live in Jackson Tn. so we are kinda like neighbors. I know it is hard to get the residue off. I usualy take my bag off in the shower and that helps a little with getting the residue off. Also have to scrape off a little with the fingernail. If I have had it on for 3-4 days usualy there is little or no residue left. If I have to change sooner I get alot more of it left on my skin. Sometimes I can't get every bit of itoff and so far it has not been a problem but then again I don't have to do any shaving in that area. You can get samples from Convatec and Hollister to try there product.

Try Alkare Adhesive Wipes and Alkare Barrier Wipes. The adhesive wipe helps dissolve the adhesive - use when you remove your system and prior to cleaning the peristoma area. The barrier wipe is used after lightly applying powder to clean & dry peri stoma - gives better sticking power to the flange!

I think it's the Alkare Adhesive wipes I use as they are the larger wipes. The smaller wipes are difficult to use and too small. If you have a specialty pharmacy, or even check with hospital pharmacy, there is also liquid adhesive remover that comes in a bottle. It's hard for me to get because they won't send it by airmail here to Anchorage as it is flammable. But, I have found it at our local hospital for something like $14 a bottle. I use a waded paper towel to apply it, and control how much or how little is needed.

I use Niltac adhesive remover spray. Works perfectly for me. Easy to use, have had no reaction to the spray, easy to clean off. Check out: http://www.niltac.com/website/niltac_reviews.html

I just use 91% Isopropal alcohol, I dab /soak the flange with it before my weekly change, it then just peals right off.

When I was using the wipes I would remove my pouch, use the wipe as gently as I could and get in the shower. I would then have such stinging pain when the water hit where the wipes had touched. but like a fool I persisted and I did set up a skin irritation. I had been told not to use facecloths or any kind of soap around the stoma but to rely on my hands, skin on skin, to clean off any residue. A couple of changes ago I decided to dump the wipes, use a facecloth and Dial soap and clean gently but well around the stoma...and voila today my skin looks normal, no itch. Have I found the solution.....I hope so. Good luck to you!

My recommendation is to investigate on the internet if you have that capability. I find out more information and products that way than from any other source. Nurses do not have access to all the products, and I believe that medical supply stores push what they make the most money on. So, I investigate on my own. Also, when you find something you make like to use, call the company and ask for free samples. I have found everyone is willing to send you products to try, especially if you contact the manufacturer directly. The supply companies are not as generous. Good luck and remember - google it. I do that with everything. I am not able to get around like I use to due to a spinal cord injury and I save myself a lot of money and gas on the internet. The other day I was going to buy an item that cost $30 with shipping. By searching the internet, I purchased the exact item for $9.99 with shipping. The information is out there.

I looked at the site and all three products sounded great. Unfortunately, they don't ship to AK, HI and PR. Most likely flammable products.

I checked my wipes and they are actually the Reliamed Extra Large. The other ones were too small to do much good. The liquid works much better, when I can find it locally. Plus, useful when you need just a little, instead of using up a large wipe.

I use goo gone type product its a citrus based product when I change everything I spray it around stoma before I get in shower it removes all residue and don't hurt your skin you just got rinse really good or new wafer won't stick will

Uni-solve liquid on a square of a mechanic's blue paper towel works great. Also when wetted with cold water ,a blue mechanic's paper towel square is also great for removing the pectin residue of an Eakin seal.
