Profuse sweating during infusions

0 Recommendations

I have been on HPN for 18 years. Over the past several years, I have been experiencing profuse sweating beginning about four to five hours into my twelve hour infusion. I am literally drenched so that I have to change my bedding, my clothing, my face, ears, and hair are all wet like I just stepped out of a sauna. It happens year 'round & not related to a particular season. I am now having to get up like this 3 to 4 times throughout the night so that my sleep cycle is always being interrupted. I am concerned that my body is rejecting my solution since this only happens during HPN infusions. A friend and fellow HPN consumer also experience the same thing and he was told that he was rejecting the solution & was given the diagnosis of compartmental syndrome. My question is this: Do any of you experience a similar cycle of sweating such as I have described? Have any of you been diagnosed with compartmental syndrome related to HPN or HPEN? My doctor who handles my nutritional support always shrugs his shoulders as if to make light of my complains and it is very frustrating. Whatever feedback can be offered will be appreciated. Thanks, Judi

Sweating

Hi Judi!

I haven't had the profuse sweating that you describe, but I do get incredibly hot and have to sleep with a fan on. I often sweat, but not as badly as you do. Way back, I had to do a piggy back of magnesium that ran in during the first hour of my PN infusion. I would get so hot from that, I felt like I was burning up! I remember a time when I was in Florida visiting my parents and their air conditioner wasn't working too well; I got so hot I had to walk down to the lake and sit there until the mag finished (my poor dad was so worried about me!).

Have you talked to your pharmacist? Someone needs to troubleshoot this with you. It could be one of the electrolytes that's making you so hot. If your pharmacist doesn't know, perhaps one of the national TPN experts could be of help. Someone needs to take this seriously; shrugging one's shoulders isn't acceptable.

I have never heard of compartmental syndrome.

I hope you get an answer to this problem.

I am not on tpn I use gtube but I get a similar reaction if the rate is too high or too much protein fat in the formula . I don't know if that is much help to you . what is your heart rate like when this happens.?
