Hi Mac:

I know a bit about insurance coverage and public programs. However, these programs, even those that are ultimately federal programs (like Medicaid) vary considerably from state to state. Would you mind sharing where you live (state/county) and what your current insurance situation is? That might help those of us in this group share more specific ideas. My expertise is mostly in California, but I might know a bit about other areas.

I'm very sorry to hear that you are losing part of your son's coverage. I am endlessly frustrated that we don't have universal health coverage in this country. I so strongly believe that access to health care is a right, not a privilege.

We live in Nebraska. We currently have insurance through UHC, they don't cover and nuetrition. Our 2ndry is Medicaid thru the Aging and Disabled Waiver.
I make too much $ for our states regular medicaid program. The formula is actually Carnation Instant Breakfast latose free at 375 cal. per can. He drinks 4 of them a day. I have inquired with Nestle and there financial assists program is currently under revisement.
Jake is allergic to whey.

Hi, MAC23.

If you haven't, you should contact the Oley Foundation, www.oley.org. The have an exchange program that makes products, inlcuding formula, available at no charge. This may be a short term solution while you are getting things worked out.
On the home page menu, I think you will find equipment exchange.

Another person and I both recommended this to someone who posted recently and they got help. No gaurentees, but Oley is a wonderful support org.

My best to you. Marie

Usually the medicaid waiver is a lifetime program, may I ask why you are losing them?

That's what I thought also. But my caseworker informed me the since Jake is getting better and since they have a full case load that someone has to go. His case will be reviewed by nurse in Lincoln and then a determination will be made. I'm gathering letters from all major drs, and sending one myself. I do not qualify for regular medicaid because I make too much $.
Sincerely, Mac123

SSI also has the benefit of medicaid, you might look into seeing if he qualifies for that. My understanding is even if you make too much money to get any money from SSI you can still qualify and get the medicaid portion. Hopefully I am right about that one...
Also, each state has a children's insurance program, and the amount you make is much higher than it is with regular medicaid. Here is the website:
http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/med/kidsconxapp.htm.
Nebraska also has Katie Beckett, but you would have to check with them to see if your son qualifies.

I wish I had a better answer for you. You are in a tough spot. Hope those links can provide you with some help!

Try accessing your local Easter Seals or Shriners Hospital, or see if someone you know is a shriner or knows one who can sponsor you. They may be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction. Also ask your pediatrician if there's an over the counter, easily found product you can get - maybe a health food store can recommend some additives to milkshakes or Pediatric Ensure to help make it cheaper.

See if you also have a local chapter of an organization that assists people with disabilities.
