impacted bowel

0 Recommendations

I was in the ER on Saturday with impacted bowel. My bowel was just full of stool, and it took "dynamite" to get me moving again. Now, I'm on Miralax three times a day and Colace daily. I have Gastroparesis, chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, colonic inertia, and a g-tube. My bowels seem to be one big spasm, and I'm still having a ton of pain. Does anyone have any advice for the pain? I'm also on lots of pain meds to counteract the pain from the GP and CIP and my other chronic conditions, and I know that slows down the bowels, but I have to try to find a balance to be comfortable. Advice??

hi aliza,
I have short bowel syndrome, had most of my small intestine removed July '08. I recently had a hickman catheter surgically placed, replacing my picc line. The surgeon gave me hydrocodone after the surgery, and I've been using it for my abdominal pains brought on by foods. It has really helped! i used to suffer for hours and hours with horrible cramps, now with the hydrocodene, it has made the pains bearable and I can eat more (my weight is 98lbs, up from 72.8 lbs since i became ill). Of course you'll have to get a RX from your doc. Hope this helps!

Yep, I'm with you, Hydrocodone is what works for me as well. I hit 104 lbs. last week! Very exciting as I was also down to about 80 at my lowest and it really is scary. With the drug, I can eat a bit more and use my g-tube for a bit more volume. I have noticed just recently that the pain meds are triggering migraines if I take too much so I'm being much more careful with the dosage.
