How do I know when my stoma is healed enough to exercise?

0 Recommendations

I was told that I need to wait 6-8 wks for my stoma to heal b4 starting any exercise program.
It's now been 7 and 1/2 wks and I don't know how to tell if my stoma is healed enough. What does a healed stoma look like?

I was told I could start exercising after 2 weeks - I guess different docs - different opinions!
Stomata heal really fast, for example a button shouldn't be placed before a stoma tract is healed and this can be done after 4 weeks.

Nevertheless I didn't start exercising after 2 weeks. It wasn't the healing of my stoma that kept me from excersing, but more the sore stomach muscles from the surgery.

When I started exercising (I think 3 or 4 weeks after the peg-tube placement) I just listened to my body and started very slowly and if a certain excercise hurt, I stopped.

Even though abdominal exercises are still uncomfortable sometimes I feel as if they also help my stomach muscles relax around the stoma and that in turn helps with any stoma-related muscle pain.

Have you had your button placed yet?

Take care,
Julia

Haven't had the button placed yet, but will soon. Just met with the surgeon today to talk about the MicKey insertion procedure and balloon vs. non-balloon. I've decided to go with a balloon, and so now they just have to order in a MicKey my size and book the procedure date. I'm so excited!

That's good news! You will love the button - it is so much better than having a PEG! :-)

I loved the button back when I had a g/j tube. You can start exercising basically as soon as you feel comfortable. I started 2 weeks after I got the tube in and within a month I was already maxing out the treadmill at chemotherapy. There really is not much you have to worry about with exercise I've found. I run plenty of distance races, not to mention practices. I also could swim, bike, climb, rough house with friends, tae kwon do, yoga...I'll stop there.
Just be careful, not about the g/j tube but about your body now that you need supplemental nutrition. Listen to your body when you're tired, and don't push yourself too hard! By far the hardest lesson I have ever to learn.

Nothing prevents you from walking, biking, running now. maybe hold off on sit ups and tackle football.

Yeah, skipping out on tackle football seems like a good idea... maybe ultimate fighting too, lol :)
I've started just a very easy basic routine of 20 minutes which consists of stretches, in-place cardio (jumping jacks, stair-stepping, etc), and some simple calisthenics (pushups, crunches, bicycles, squats, planks.) So far I haven't experienced pain or stiffness, so we'll see how it goes.
I'm determined to take it easy and work my way up slowly - something I've never been previously famous for:)
