Broviac Infections

My son keeps going in and out the hospital for line infections. How do I prevent the line infections?

The Oley Foundation has some resources to help.

First, you might want to try the HPN Complication Chart posted at http://www.oley.org/charts/newHPN.pdf.

Second, I have some information on general infection prevention and the latest research on ethanol and Taurolidine locks. Contact me if you are interested.

You may not be able to fully prevent them, no matter how sterile things are. Your son is probably immunocompromised due to his nutritional deficits. I'm that way as well and it seems like I can't get much of a break infection-wise. However, my last infection was with my hickman (similar to broviac) and ever since them, I have instilled ethanol each night overnight. It sits there and hopefully prevents infection. So far so good!

Our doctors here said ethanol causes clots and it is just a study.
