Bicycle Touring

After my first Oley Conference, I am convinced that I can do more than I thought before. I have always enjoyed biking and would like to propose that the more physically active people on this site consider joining me next summer at one of the less expensive multi-day bicycle tours. Given that the conference next year is in New York, the two tours run by the NY State parks department along the Erie Canal and the Hudson River would be ideal complements to the conference even though they fall much later than the conference was this year. There are others in New England, Eastern Canada, North Carolina and New Mexico but the two in New York might be easiest logistically. I think if we got a group of us on one of these tours we could get support from one or more of the home medical supply firms to coordinate the availability of supplies throughout the trip. Even without the support of a supplier, the cost of the trip includes the tour operator driving supplies, clothes, tents, sleeping bags etc from site to site and for those who can eat it includes two meals and two snacks a day.

I am now not much of a cyclist only doing around 5-8 miles a day on a hybrid as a commuter around Washington DC. In addition, I am now working up to 25 miles or more on a weekend by fall. So, I think that even someone who has not ridden a bike in a long time could do this. Anyone game?

I am now up to biking 12 miles at a time on weekends. I find that I have to stop every 4 miles to hydrate as I can't just drink out of the water bottle. Today, I will be shooting for 20 miles

Hello Alan,

I'm so glad you received the support you needed at the Oley Conference to see that even with feeding tubes, and TPN life is still full of adventures.

Wow, biking 12 miles at a time is awesome. I have not bike since before my daughter was born 10 years ago. And even with that I never bike more then 3 miles at a time just because we don't live in a biking friendly area. We live 40 mins away from where the Oley Conference was held this year.

I wonder if maybe people could pledge bikers and the donations go to Oley? Just like the Walk-a-ton that Oley does at ever conference.

Blessings,

Lesley a/k/a NinaBean

Go Alan!

Well Alan, I'm in Arizona and haven't been on my bike in over a year, but a goal is always a good thing! I'm not sure if I'm going to the conference yet, but I think that would be fun to do a group ride.

For anyone that is interested, here are the links to the New York State Rides. It will give you an idea what this is all about.

Here are a couple of from this year's tour that really show that anyone can do it.

Hi Alan,
I'm curious about your bike--you say it's a hybrid. What does that mean? What brand is it? Thanks for posting--you're inspiring me to get back on my bike.
Julie

I have a Novaro (REI) bike. It is around 12 years old. Hybrid bikes are upright seating bikes with 700 cc wheels. Every major manufacturer makes one. You can get one from Trek, Cannondale, Fuji, Raliegh, etc starting at around $350 at most local bike shops. Hybrids are a nice compromise as the narrower tires are better for street and bike path use where traction is not needed than the wider tires on mountain bikes or cross bikes that have 26" wheels usually. I have a feeling that people doing the NY state tours use every bike under the sun. Just if you are buying a bike remember you will probably have it a long time. In 12 years i have just replaced both tires, a couple of tubes and the front wheeel and brakes after an accident on a dirt path. (I am a bit clumsy.

I would love to do that. I need dates to it doesn't conflict my sons wedding. Please let me know and how many miles to start practicing. Charliegirl

Alan,
I am a very active cyclist and just completed my 9th year doing the bike ride Across georgia. A seven day event. I started the feeding tube in Dec. 2006. It hasn;t slowed me down. I just had to make some adjusments. I invented a hydration system using a camal bak and a primrt bulb after I lost my ability to swallow. Since joining this website recently I found out about the Zevex pump and just started using it.

I would be glad to ride with you any time
