My 12 year old brother has a bone sticking out near his chest, and it hurts after physical activity or leaning on it wrong. I was just wondering if anyone can help me with it.?

Assuming he has NF, it sounds like it could be pectus deformity. Both pectus excavatum (sunken chest) and pectus carnitum (pigeon chest) are seen more frequently in NF, and other rasopathies, with the pectus excavatum probably being the more common of the two. Pectus carnitum can make certain bones in the chest appear as though they are pointing out. Pectus excavatum can cause rib flare.

Pectus excavatum

Pectus carnitum

In most cases of pectus deformity in NF treatment is never needed. It does concern me that you say your brother feels discomfort upon physical exertion. If it is a pectus issue then it could mean that some pressure is been placed on his organs, lung or heart potentially.

Other clavicle issues may also be more common in NF. As well, tumors in that area should be ruled out.

Regardless of the cause, given the risk of vascular complications including heart issues you really do need to bring this up with your NF specialist asap.

Keep us posted.

As Cindy said, get to a specialist.

As you likely are already aware, an orthopedist is a doctor who specializes in injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, which includes the skeleton (bones) and its surrounding joints and muscles. Seems to me this is another specialist you should also consider seeing.

It's actually his rib cage, its been 2 months or more. If it was a broken bone it would of healed by now I think.
