My 17 year old daughter Aimee was denied entry to the Navy recently on medical terms because of her NF, though we do have the right to appeal.
She had an Opthamologists appointment last week and everything was clear, no optic gliomas and no Lisch Nodules.
Yesterday we saw Prof. Kathryn North at the Childrens Hospital at Westmead, at the NF clinic. (there is also apparently an adults NF clinic). Kathryn North is the World expert on NF. I had seen her a few times before with my son who also has NF1.
Kathryn saw Aimee and advised she has a "very, very, very, very, very, very, very mild case of NF" this is exactly how she said it , she is a lovely, funny, woman and is well worth seeing.
She rechecked the report of 'No Lisch Nodules' and agreed but she said this is very unusual as 96% of NF patients of her age have them.
Aimee only has freckleing, two small dermal fibromas and if you look very closely she does have about 6 CALS though Kathryn found it difficult to find these as some of them are very light.
As far as she is concerned because of this she said "Aimee basically has a skin condition" and is prepared to write a letter of support to the Navy stating this.
This gives us hope and we will now appeal the decision.
Anyone with NF should be assessed on their own merits and not just advised they are medically unfit. There could be a lot of people like Aimee and they should be treated as individuals.
