Teeth

Not long ago, somewhere on here, I reported the results of a study that found that NFers were more likely to have dental issues, cavities specifically. I can't seem to find that thread. Just wanted to update that a more recent study done last month in Finland had total opposite findings. Not sure if that matters to anyone but for interests sake here it is.

i have always had cavities.... till now they are all filled i dont know if its nf related or not.

I've never had issues with my teeth. At 48 I only have 2 cavities. My daughter, at 23 has 1.
For a while there we used tooth paste that helps with problem teeth. It's expensive, so we've switched back to regular tooth paste. I would hope that good dental hygiene and diet helps.
I remember the original topic, there was also one on the ctf bb.

It would be interesting to see what the results would be if they ran a larger study again here. In Finland I believe they have dental coverage through both private and gov't run plans so nobody as far as I know pays out of pocket. Also I was reading recently that they consume a lot of xilytol there which offers some cavity protection and may strengthen bones. I know its a stretch but I'm just wondering if there are other factors involved.

just started having problems around 3 years ago when i was 29. all good before that.

I really haven't had any problems...which I am happy for. :o)

Interesting thread. My son has more trouble with cavities than the rest of the family, but I always thought it was due to not having the fine motor skills to brush well.

I started a thred asking if other people had problems I know I do,

Well according to the first study NFers are more prone to cavaties but according to the most recent one, they aren't. Interesting though.

I just participated in NIH study in July...in that study we visited a dental clinic, where a study for NFers was taking place...in THAT study, it showed NFers have a different enamel or something...they told me that ALL of the NFers they tested have problems with their teeth.

Right, and that is always what I believed, in part because it made sense given the vitamin D studies, but apparently this more recent study doesn't back up those findings...like I said though I wonder if there are other factors which explain the different findings.

I just went to the dentist yesterday. Im 29 and have never had a cavity. I do grind my teeth very badly though due to anxiety.

I have horrible teeth it started when I was 19 and went down hill. I brush my teeth at least 2 times a day if not more. I floss on a regular basis and still have bad teeth. The dentist told me it was due to genetics. But didn't say how!

only thing i have is another set of teeth trying to come out at times. don't know if it have anything with nf or not. I have had 5 teeth pulled and only got 2 missing and they trying to come in.

I just went to the dentist and she didn't say anything about my enamel being different and I told her I had NF and to look for neurofibromas for me..

i do have multiple cavities. didn't know could be related to nf.thought it was my poor brushing habbits and too much cola.

Im 29 and have one cavity. I got it when I was 18 and haven't had one since. My mom has NF and has terrible teeth, but luckly I have my dad's teeth. Healthy and strong.

ok found out that severe dental issues can be related to nf-1.today found out that in jan2010 i will be
getting fitted for dentures at the age of 32
