Propolis and Bio 30

Has anybody heard about this product and tried it? Does anybody know anything about the doctor who is working on it?

There is an on-line group for people with NF2 who are trying the bio 30.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NF2Trialtalk/?v=1&t=search&ch=web&pub= groups&sec=group&slk=1

My daughter is believed to have NF1 and she has used the bio30 for the past 18 months. While she doesn't have any tumors that we know of, we are quite happy with the overall effect of the product. That's purely my personal choice and opinion. I have corresponded with Dr. Maruta on many occasions and believe him to be of high integrity and caring. He continues to do work with propolis and other natural products and has recently completed some work on the South American propolis which contains a totally different anti-cancer compound than the bio30. His work is now peer reviewed and published and I believe he does receive some funding from the Department of Defense. Shortly after the bio30 was reported in the media NFinc hosted a presentation with Dr. Maruta. Recently CTF has added his abstract to their home page.

Some NF1 patients from the other BB reported that they tried the propolis for a short time but stopped because it didn't have a noticeable effect on their dermal tumors and it ended up being a heat topic of discussion in some cases. If you search the Children's Tumor website using the terms propolis, bio30, bio 30 (with the space), or Dr. Maruta you can read all the details of when the initial information came out.

Hope that helps.

Cindy

Thank you for the info Cindy!

I am a french mum of a 8 years' old girl who has NF.
Can you tell me if she is too young for Propolis Bio30 ?
What about your daughter ?

Do you know il there is a scientific trial about propolis for NF1 ?

thanks a lot for your answer.

Sophie

Sophie there is no formal clinical trial for humans using bio30. The original study was a small mouse study. There has been an informal trial (for lack of a better word) where some NF1 and NF2 patients are using the product and self reporting their experiences. There are some brief comments on those folks in the bio 30 paper that was published by Phototherapy Research Journal in the UK (see link below). Dr. Maruta has said that children over age 10 or a certain weight (I can't recall what that is) could take the propolis. If you research you will see that propolis is generally considered a safe product that has been used since ancient times, however, it does affect blood vessel formation which might be of concern. My daughter has been taking it for some time but it is not something I can recommend to anyone else. I hesitated mentioning my daughter because I don't want anyone to think that I am advocating this. Hopefully, we will be hearing more about this down the road.

I'm so glad to read your info on propolis. I found an article on Advocure about Dr Maruta and Bio30 - I emailed Manuka (NZ tea tree) Honey in New Zealand who I think produce Bio30, with some questions about propolis - we can't import Manuka propolis into Australia because of quarantine regulations - but my questions were forwarded to Dr Maruta and he was very prompt in reply and helpful.

My father was a beekeeper when I was a child and we chewed the honeycomb caps and refuse wax like gum - this was very rich in propolis. It is probably unlikely, but I did wonder if this has anything to do with my vestibular schwannomas developing later in life (45+). My sister keeps some hives now and I have ordered all her cappings and refuse wax - guess what I chew these days? It is very natural and if there is any benefit I will win - besides it is much nicer to chew than gum !!! Propolis is the resin bees collect from trees and mix with wax to seal honeycomb when it is full of honey, they also use it to seal any fractures in the hive structure.
Cindy you have a lot of info - thanks for sharing - I will watch for any more info.

Oh I didn't know that you couldn't import the Manuka propolis to Australia...is that new? I have a friend in Australia who tried the bio30 on her son for awhile and I don't think they had any problems getting it. Mind you, that was nearly two years ago now. I hope I don't have problems getting it sent to Canada.

Cindy

The company is Manuka Health and it's the bio 30 alcohol free.

Manuka health are not able to send propolis Bio30 Liquid into my state (WAust) as we have very stringent quarantine regulations to protect our bee industry. I didn't know other states allowed bee products.

My friend is from the part of Australia where the floods were, if that helps. I have an interest in bees and bee products and was curious about this. I looked it up and apparently your state does have different regulations than other parts of Australia.

Interesting. Canada has strict rules too but propolis is considered low on the risk list. As long as it is for human consumption it is apparently okay. However, if it were for livestock then there is a whole other set of regulations.

Cindy

Santel, yes, I too think honeycomb is nice to chew and gum is not.

I read the articles and have two questions. Bio 30 is alcohol free and contains propylene glycerol instead of. I don't like "propylene " . What do you think , No toxicity ? For the patients who do the trial, they have to take 25 mg per kilo daily . Is it for 50 kg x 25 mg of the liquid daily ? It is enormous. I must be silly .Thanks a lot Cindy and excuse my english .

Bonjour Azur, Comment ca va? Je suis marié à un Canadien français. Je ne peux pas parler français.

I know the mouse study states that the mouse received 100 mgs per kg but the mice only weighed 20 grams and only received it twice a week. I believe the dose that was originally indicated for an adult of average size is 1.6 mls 3 X daily. For someone 10 years and above but not yet an adult it's .75 mls 3X daily...this is about half a teaspoon a day in total...or three veggie capsules a day. Roughly double for an adult depending on weight.

The glycerol base that is used is one that is commonly found in many pharmaceuticals, foods and products. I don't like manufactored chemicals either and it was a long time ago that I researched this but I believe the toxicity risk is considered low. I think also that the fatty acid component of this formulation is required for absorption of CAPE, the anti cancer compound found in the NZ propolis.

Hopefully we will know more about propolis or other natural products in the future.

Cindy

Oh , merci beaucoup Cindy .
I was happy to read french words on this board. So I wait until my daughter weight increases a bit ; I think your info is the right one. On the phytotherapy article, they must have written something wrong about the dose. It's so great to question you . You answer immediately; You live in Canada ?

Sorry for my ignorance but is this a product you can order or do you have to be a part of a clinical trial? Can you buy this in a local health food store and does bee pollen/honey have any of the same helpful products?

LOL

How old is your daughter? Does she have NF very severely? My Adrianna is nearly 11 years old, so far she is only showing some signs of NF.

Aubie, you can buy propolis in any local health food store but it probably won't have the CAPE content that the NZ propolis does. I believe they tested propolis from several different locations and found that the ones in the U.S. only contained trace amounts compared to the NZ propolis. The link for the bio30 is posted earlier in this thread. Keep in mind thought that there have been no official human trials on this. Some people tried it without any luck.

Honey and bee pollen both have very good health properties in my opinion. We use both in my house. I'm thinking of adding royal jelly too which is not a product I've tried yet. Bee pollen has flavanoids as does the propolis but there is nothing that would indicate that bee pollen and honey are helpful in NF, its never been studied. As far as I know neither contain CAPE or ARC the active anti-cancer ingredients in the NZ and South American propolis. Our Aussie friend Santel is probably the expert on the specifics of bee products.

As a side note...honey is mentioned often in the bible and the healing power of bees is mentioned in the Muslim Quran. The use of bee products is ancient.

Cindy, my daughter is 8 years old. The diagnostic has been done in august this summer. Many cafe au lait spots and a plexiform neurofibroma in the neck which frightens me a lot. As it is recent, she has got no scan either irm of it. Im am angry because i think doctors dont want to. My daughter is nerveous too : TDHA ? but we are giving her green brazilian propolis (she hates it) for the time (young), honey , royal "gelée" , magnesium . Sometimes she works well at school, sometimes not.
I am very very anxious about neurofibromatosis.

Dr. Maruta's work with the green propolis is published now too.

How long has your daughter been taking it? Do you notice any changes? We put ours into a veggie capsule because my daughter found the propolis stuck to her tongue and teeth. She has no problem swallowing capsules so this was much easier. You can't really do them ahead of time because they melt but my daughter has learned to fill her own just before she needs to take it.

The doctors where I am do not know much about NF either and it is very frustrating and scary at times.

I will keep your little girl in my thoughts and prayers.

Cindy

The diagnostic of Annabel is really new so we learnt about propolis in october thanks to internet and Dr Maruta articles . A we dont know how to help our daughter, I gave her first a drink with a little propolis . But this week I found brazilian propolis in a shop. Her weight is a bit under 25 kg but we will see . When she weights about 25 kg, we will order bio 30 propolis , I think. I didn't know about the capsules . It's great . I will search an buy some obviously.

Sophie

Wondering if there are any adults using this? I am in touch with them and will likely be purchasing some soon. I would definitely like to know if there are any adults taking it and what your results have been.

I have been taking the Bio 30 for about 2 months now with no ill effectss. I have nF2 and I believe this could be a real cure.
