Sounds like you ended up with a double whammy. I had a friend with beta thalasemia trait, she was Italian from Calabria where they have a high rate of this. It is often linked to certain ethnic backgrounds. She never had what you would call serious problems just sometimes more fatigued and pale as I recall but most of the time you would have never known by her activity level.

I'm sorry you have so much to deal with. I didn't know what beta thalasemia was until I googled it just now. I hope your not in too much pain. Is it very painful like sickle cell anemia? Just when I think I have it bad...My pastor once posted on facebook we Christians can always say "The best is yet to come!" That gives me so much comfort.
