Neuromas under the nail

0 Recommendations

Hello Everyone:

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with their neuromas growing under their nails. My ortho hand doc seems to think that is one of the reasons for the severe pain that I have. It is like someone is ripping my nail off and stabbing it. I am going to be having six nodules taken off on the left hand, two large ones near the wrist, a small plexiform growing on the forearm and a few other ones near the thumb. He dosen't want to remove the nail for fear it will not grow back. He will remove the other ones first, and than see if that stops the pain. I told him that I'd live without a finger nail, if it would stop the pain.

Has anyone experienced similar pain??

Thanks debbi

Surgery Pain

Have your doctors ever mentioned that it might be a glomus tumor? Is it sensitive to cold? Is it only sensitive in a specific area? I had a glomus tumor removed from under the nail of my middle left finger several years ago. The NIH is finding that glomus tumors are more common in people with NF. My glomus tumor was unbelievably painful when it was hit. It was like 'picking up the red phone to my brain and telling it to DO SOMETHING NOW to relieve the pain.'

Glomus is the first thing that came to mind. I have pain in the tips from touch and cold sensitivity. I'm trying to point my Doc's in the right direction.

I had a hard time getting my doctors to take the pain in my hand seriously. I finally saw a hand surgeon, who doubted that I had a glomus but did do an ultra sound, which showed the glomus. Because they are so rare in the general population, it sees the medical community overall refuses to consider that it might be common in NF. I have pain in my right hand also. The NIH did an MRI, but it did not show a glomus. I would like to find out if glomuses are more likely to be found by ultrasound, the method my hand surgeon used.

Thank you to All:

I too have the extreme sensitity to cold to all my fingers -- the fingers feel like touching a red hot iron to the point that I am almost in tears. I wll do more research on this and give it to my doctor. Since I am out of work and have no insurance, I have to rely on the doctors at our county hospital. The doctors that I have seen, think that I am making this up.

Thank you for your input and reassuring me that I am not crazy.

THANK YOU THANK YOU

Yes, glomus tumors reportedly arise in NF. They respond fairly well to surgery.

Sensitivity to cold can also be a sign of Raynaud's which is not typically associated with NF.

Thanks for posting this, Cindy. Dr. Stewart and Jennifer Sloan, 2 of the authors of the article, were people who evaluated me at the NIH.

Hi

I had one in my middle finger. If I hit it is was like some one stuck a knife in it. No xray or tests saw anything. The hand surgeon explain to me and had me sign a form stating when he operated and found nothing he would not be libal. so he operated and found a tumor. A few years later I went back because of more pain. He operated again and removed one that grew back. Both times my nail grew back and it healed great. I again have pain but I will wait until I can't live with it. Surgery was nothing and it healed fast. I think he gound it just below the nail. some times it like a tooth ache just ponding Pain. cold also makes it act up as does typing

Sounds like glomus tumors to me as well. I saw Dr. Stewart at NIH, and they were confirmed with MRI. They used a three tesla MRI the second I went there. I opted not to have surgery because the MRI did not locate a tumor on the fingers that have the most pain. I have more pain in my left hand, but they found a definite one on my right. I also have, in the last few weeks, developed more little "nodules" on the fingers of my right hand.

Thanks again -- The pain, is like someone is stabbing it. I appreciate everyone's input... I wll be presenting this to my hand ortho when I go back to schdule some other surgery for my hand, and maybe they can take care of it at that time.

Thanks again --- debcal
