"My eyes hurt mama!"

2 Recommendations

My son is constantly telling me that his eyes hurt. At first I would just shrug it off. He tends to say things just to get attention. (he is 3 and developmentally delayed) But then he started saying it even when he wasn't lacking any attention so I brought it up at both his pediatrician and eye doctor. Neither one seemed to be concerned. I was told that Ky has a slight astigmatism in both eyes but that would not cause pain. He stopped saying it for awhile and then just tonight he started it again "Mama, my eyes hurt!" His last MRI came out fine as did his last eye exam. Has anyone else gone through this? It may have nothing to do with NF but I thought I would bring it up just in case it does. I feel bad because I dont know how to help him....

Tylenol Glioma Pain Allergies

I'm wondering if he may have a sinus infection, or allergies. I do remember having a headache in my eye as a small child. They'd come and go, usually felt the pain in my right eye. Nothing ever came of it. My parents didn't know I had NF back then so it was just treated like a normal headache. I wish I could help you more. It's tough when our kids hurt.

I thought the same thing. When I was small I wanted to dig my eyes what use to rub rub them. My mom use to yell at me all the time about it. Always wonder if why I wear glassess now

I have NF-1 and have tumors on my optic nervers and I have eye pain due to this so, please make sure that he does not have any optic nerve tumors, you might have to see a nuro-optimologist which is who follows my optic nerve tumors. I hope that it is not this but I would rather be safe than sorry later on.

i agree wtih 555-- get this checked out just to make sure. i wish you well.

Hi, did you see a pedeatric optamalagist that just specializes in utchildren, there must be something that is causing pain, my daughter eyes were crossed I was told they will straighten out, if I had listened she would be blind today. I seen 3 doctors before they find that she had an optic glioma, If I had listened to the first doctor I seen he told me she would never walk talk or do anything the rest of her life. She is now 13, she is delayed and is in grade 8 in a special class. Just keep praying and going back to the doctor.

I agree...call the doctor as many times as you have to to get them to listen....

My daughter used to complain about the same thing and after seeing the eye doctor we came to the conclusion that there was nothing major wrong. Some who have NF1 have more sensitivity to things they feel. She used to complain about her legs hurting her and her feet when she would walk, so until just a couple of years ago, which she is now 7, she would ride in a stroller when I knew there would be a lot of walking involved. Again it was explained to me, and I also did research that some who have NF1 have sensitivities. She doesnt say that her eyes hurt anymore and hasn't for some time. I hope by now you have found the answer you were looking for from the doctor.

Well the doctors just want to give it time. I hope they are right about this. I spoke with his neurologist and he said that because the MRI came out fine he just wants to wait and see what happens. (if Ky starts to complain more often, etc) He also asked me if it could be migraines that Kyle is experiencing. I tried asking Ky if his head hurt and he tells me no. Maybe next time he says his eyes hurt I will give him a dose of tylenol and see if that helps. Other than that I guess there is not much more I can do, or the doctors for that matter. Just thought I would update everyone. Thanks for the input.

I have had sever headaches since I was a toddler, evere since I can remember actualy. The Dr.s have tried everythingg to no avail. However this is what lead to the diagnosis, of NF and according to the data I have read, as well as what the student Dr. who was present at my family Dr.s office who is currently studing NF, says headaches are very common. These headaches have been dibilitating for me and my everyday activities, such as WORK. Remember you are not alone!!!

Be agressive about it, it is a terrible way to live your life if it is true, because it is so unessecsary to live in this sort of pain.

Best of luck!

I was going to ask about migraines - when I get migraines they are in my left eye. When this happens I feel like gouging the eye out of my head.

I would check things like sensitivity to light or noise when his eyes hurt. Maybe check it out with a pediatric neurologist or a neurologist that specializes in headaches.
