Cancer Surgery Glioma Brain tumors Decadron Pain Edema Depression
Can you pls let me know what you mean by raw foods in the above reference?
I believe it is time for alterantive health care such as homeopathic treatments to merge with science and medicine.
There isn't any reason this cannot be done with the exception that some doctors against it. Now I only see doctors who support alternative health care as a way of enhancing the medicine they practice. This has become a wonderful partnership to have.
I have used Reiki, Cranial Sacral, and Touch Therapies to help with my pain and depression. They certainly have helped to reduce symptoms yet not suppress tumors.
I have heard some good things about a raw food diet yet haven't tried it.
You can Google Raw foods. One person I know that can help you with learning about it is Alissa. She wrote a book on it.www.AlissaCohen.com She is wonderful and will help you anyway she can. The book is called living on raw food.
Raw foods may be healthier but there is no reason to think that they are especially helpful with NF related problems. There is no specific study on this...only personal opinion. I think we have to be careful when people ask a question like the original poster did to indicate when it is an opinion and when there is actually a body of NF related research. In this case, no such research exists.
According to mice studies it is possible that some people with NF may actually require a higher protein diet (while others may do okay on a lower protein diet) for proper bone development. We won't know if this applies to humans until further work is done. For some eating a completely raw diet there can also be a problem with vitamin D deficiency. Low vitamin D has been linked to an increase in NF tumors.
I'm not saying that a raw food diet is bad...only that we don't have anything to say that it helps with NF.

Where can I read about the mice study about NF and protein diets? That would be really interesting to read.
I agree that a patient needs to talk with his or her doctor before going after alternative health care options especially with the way tumors can grow in NF.
Also as I said, there is no reason science and medicine can't start doing studies in the field of alternative health care. I would love to know if any organization is doing so such as massage and touch therapies since this area is a big upcoming field.
Does anyone know about this?
Mysticmike, Here are a couple of articles on the NF and protein issue.

Unfortunately people have not read your question properly, the answer is are looking for is Hekla Lava. This is a homeo treatment.
I was recommened this by a homeo doctor.
Stuart, has the Hekla Lava helped any?
I'm sure nobody read the thread wrong though we did get off track. There is nothing to suggest that any homeopathic remedy is helpful with NF because there is no research on this. There are many, many products that claim to have the ability to influence tumors but that doesn't mean they actually do. Naturapaths recommend all sorts of things, that doesn't mean it works. Most reputable Naturapaths that I know would not make grand sweeping statements about any product curing NF or cancer. Thats quite an impressive statement to make.
Stuart, I actually do keep an open mind where any natural products are concerned, I just think we have to be careful in making recommendations. Has this done anything for you? Someone (perhaps you?) posted sometime ago on another BB that they were trying this but they didn't sound too hopeful.

My ( year old daughter has been on Homeopathy and Alternatives for the majority of the last 5 years.
Our Dr.'s at the Cleveland Clinic are very open to our approach and when we were there this last Thursday, Dr. Tekautz suggested we start her on 2000 I.U.'s of vitamin D3. We had already done that.
Sarah also takes the following.
Boswellia
Tumeric
COQ-10
Veggie Caps
Ruta and Calcium Phospherica
High Protein Diet with lots of veggies and fruit
She also drinks unsweetened Soy milk as opposed to regular milk.
The food is clean ( no toxicity ).
Now I will have people tell me I am nut's, but not so. I am on the computer everyday looking for new therapies. NO we do not try all.
Cleveland is doing a clinical trial on Boswellia. Dr. Stevens D.O is doing the trial. Boswellia could possibly replace Decadron for Edema during radiation and surgery, oh and tumor growth. They are also doing trials on COQ-10 to keep the heart healthy.
All of this is available at the NIH website.

Hello everybody.
I'm from France, so, please, excuse my english...
Mon son has nf1.
He follow an homeopathic cure called isotherapy. The doctor want to keep his body clean. He try to erase bad effects of vaccination for example, or of diseases he caught in the past, because NF is perhaps an opportunist disease.
My son has 13, he has a pseudarthrosis and nothing else.
I hope you have understood me... ;)
Patti,
Thanks for your posting. I will have to investigate both Cleveland Clinic and NIH. Anything that can be helpful in treating NF is worth an investigation. Patti, you are doing what you feel is right and proper. I applaud you.
I am glad someone is finally investigating alternative therapies. There is no reason this can't be done. Any adult and/or parent ought to be allowed to try anything they feel will help.
If his or her doctor is against this get another doctor who will support it. That is exactly what I have done and I am way better off then I was.
My previous doctor was only for science. How sad he didn't have an open mind and only believed in drugs, surgery, or waiting for the next mouse model to come along.
Who knows perhaps something other then a traditional drug will be helpful and praises to NIH and the Cleveland Clinic for performing this vital research.
Mike, There are actually researchers out there working on natural therapies for NF and IMHO there is also a lot of crap out there in the natural products arena that hasn't been proven to do diddly squat. Did your doctor only believe in science or was it more that he just didn't believe in natural products? Some people seem to think they have to pick one. Personally, I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. I do believe wholeheartedly in science.... AND I believe that very specific, some as yet unknown, natural remedies may help with NF and that science can prove it. This allows me to make choices in the natural products that I use for my daughter that are grounded in research and not just research but research that is specific to NF or its pertinent pathways. Its not enough for me to say that a product address this or that, if it isn't specific to NF in some way with a very good safety record then personally I don't use it...and even then when we use something we use caution. We have to be so prudent...too many products or the wrong products or the wrong combination of products can be pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidative and promote more free radicals than what we started out with.
Individuals with NF have been looking to natural therapies since time eternal. It isn't a new thing at all and some people's personal experiments have been pretty interesting. I've heard some doozies...some make sense and some are just nuts. A few seem to have made people worse.
I do a couple of shifts a week at our local Health Food Store. There are far too many people that come in and say "my friend told me I should try this" or "I read about this on the internet". Half the time they don't have a clue what the product is, let alone what it does. Many times they don't realize the finer implications of what they are taking and could be putting themselves at risk. NF is a very specific, very unigue disorder that behaves differently than most other tumor disorders.
Cindy
To be honest, as I have so many, i have not noticed much diffirence. But i do not know whether or not it has slowed down the growth/appearnace of new tumors
Hi Cindy,
I am thinking you are mad about my last response. Are you? In my opinion, you and I are on the same page. Although I think I am more ready to try any treatment especially to reduce pain. The tumors I can live with.
What have you tried for an alternative health care treatment? What do you say or recommend to people that come to the store you work at?
As I first wrote, I use Reiki, Massage and touch therapies as my choice of alternative health care. These focus on energy balance and connecting body, mind, and spirit.
This article discusses the benefits of touch therapy.
http://www.casapalmera.com/articles/healing-touch-therapy/
My previous doctor always wanted "scientific proof" for any NF treatment and always boo hooed, whenever, I would bring up alternative health care including touch forms of it.
His claim was there is no science to back this up. Now with responses here, I now read science is investigating alternative treatment.
I have waited 43 years for some mouse to come up with a effective treatment for tumors. No mouse has yet. I hear this every single year at medical symposiums. The general response is,"Science hasn't found an effective way of treating NF. Yet, we keep investigating."
Few NF professionals I have talked to want to even venture into alternative health care and I am tired of waiting.
When I get a Reiki, massage, or touch therapy, I use less drugs and have less pain.
I am grateful to everyone for responding to this topic.
No Mike I am not mad at all, I'm sorry if I left that impression and yes I think we are on the same page. I am just saying that there are all kinds of things out there. I just get very concerned when somebody asks if there is a cure for NF and somebody else says "yes go eat cocoa beans, a friend told me they were good for tumors" (or whatever, you get my point). Maybe its just me but I guess I think answers should focus on things that have been looked at in NF or in the relevant pathways, or in things that people have actually personally tried and seen results with. Heck I'm not picky....I'll accept my aunt ate cocoa beans every day and never got a tumor or a mouse study or a theoretical discussion about why something MIGHT help and I'll look into it further. Its these random things that come out of blue that sometimes bug me. That's all I'm saying. In my experience people will say X works for NF despite any good reason why it would or any proof that it does, then somebody else tries it for five minutes and then decides that all natural products are a con. And that drives me insane!!!! If somebody is going to say "here try this" then I just want to hear their reasoning why it MIGHT help or their personal results, otherwise its too darn easy to recommend junk.
We just have to be really careful what we are advocating. Obviously some therapies like touch therapies are quite benign and pose no threat. Others are a waste of time and money and might pose actual risks.
I dunno....maybe its just me but thats how I see it.
Cindy
Cindy,
That is a relief that you aren't angry and you see us on the same page.
Now before anyone sees any contradiction, touch therapy and massage has to be done carefully with all people. The reason is because tissue damage can occur. It would have been better if I had mentioned that previously.
The touch therapist I use is a registered nurse, who works mainly in cancer wards, and trains other nurses, some doctors, lay people, etc in performing touch therapy appropriately.
Can you help me to find on the NIH site ? Which chapter ?
thanks a lot
