If you've read my profile, you'll know that I love spiders. Yes - spiders. When I find them indoors, I will relocate them to a more suitable location - outside or, in the colder months, to our heated/attached garage. How do you relocate a spider, you ask? Easy. Take a glass, put it over the spider. Wedge a sturdy piece of paper/cardboard under the glass. Firmly pick up the paper/glass and take it to the desired location. Set the glass on the ground, gently take the sheet out from the glass, and tip it on it's side. Voila!

Well, anyways - I was in the bedroom and noticed a black speck in one of the corners. I was all set to get ready to locate it, but on closer inspection, I noticed that it was a black spider - small with spindly legs and a web that looked kind of messy - almost like a cotton ball that had been pulled apart (Black Widow spiders have webs that look like that. They also have very spindly legs). I was wondering if it was a Black Widow, so I went and got a flashlight to see if I was right. Well, lo and behold, I saw the faint, red hour-glass shape on it's belly/back. Crap! That's the first time I'd ever run into one. Given the fact that I have 5 cats who like to explore and go after small, moving objects, I had no other choice than to get out the Raid and exterminate it. :-( I don't want to risk anything bad happening to my cats, nor me and my hubby. After I sprayed it, she whithered on down and staggered into the crack between the wall and the baseboard. :-(

Seriously - I do feel guilty. My thinking is that she got in from the outside through some sort of crack - in our foundation, perhaps? And made her way to the crack between the wall to our bedroom and the baseboard.

Hopefully I'll never have to do that again - but I'm glad I got to her before one of my cats did - she was at a cat's eye level.

Any other spider lovers on this bb? I didn't think so. o_O

eeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww Spiders creep me out.

Well, you are one of a kind :). I have lots of spiders in my apartment, you are welcome to come here anytime and relocate them for me. I either jump and run... or try and kill them.. Sorry, I know that must break your heart. lol

I hate spiders, especially black widows, the dogs I had for a long time died all of a sudden, and when we were moving their houses to give them away my then husband discovered a black widows nest.
So we came to the conclusion that they were bitten by a black widow.
The only insects I like are ladybugs and damselflies or dragonflies.
The only ones I will touch are ladybugs though, others I find repulsive.
You kind of reminded me of an ex coworker, she was a vegeterian and loved all insects, we would not let a guy kill a cochroach and she took it in her hands and put it outside, yuck!

Forgot to mention I get a lot of crickets in my house but I don't kill them, I just shoosh them out, they say they bring goodluck, who knows but just in case.

@hopefull - I do the same with any type of bug. I try to shoo them out - especially flies. But my cat, Spyder usually takes care of the bugs (especially flies) for me. He can leap up in midair and catch a fly.

@hopefull - I'm not a vegetarian, or a 'vegan' for that matter. I too, love ladybugs! Actually, I purchase them from a company that sells gardening stuff. This year, however, I didn't purchase any. And coincidentally, we didn't have the usual number of garden and funnel spiders that we usually have.

I relocate spiders too. Spiders are considred Tricksters in Native American Mythology.

Peace,
Jerry

Spiders are also good luck. :-)

Thanks for that link!

Would you have killed that Black Widow, like I did? I have 5 cats to worry about.

Yea, I would have killed a Black Widow.

i hate spiders. when i see them i scream like a litttle girl. this one time i went clif jumping in easteren washington. i jumped off this 25 foot clif. then i had to clim up the rock wall there was hundards of spiders. it was so gross.

I let my wife take care of them for me. Wasps too. Actually any bug. and rodents. and dust bunnies.

I love spiders too. However if it were a black widow I think the poor spider would receive no mercy that is unless I were able to safely capture it and then I'd set it outside on the compost pile.

well im personally glad you killed it but sorry you feel so bad ,
i only have 1 question????????
if you relocate them ,,why do you have raid????
lol

Sorry. I really hate spiders. With a passion.

When we first moved into this house, we would be in the basement, and be sitting on the floor and look next to us, and there would be a Wolf spider right there. Killed every one of them.

Then, we called the "Orkin" man. He said you couldn't actually spray for spiders, but, you spray, and keep all the other little critters away, and the spiders leave too. Took about two treatments, but, no more spiders!

I used to be a cable guy. I always hated going into basements and crawl spaces and running into spiders. Sorry, but, I killed those too. I can't stand the thought of being bitten by one!

Please, don't anyone hate me. This is where I come for support! :-)

The Raid was left over for a serious hornet/wasp problem we had over the summer. Other than that, our cat, Spyder, takes care of most bugs.

Black widows are cool!... we have some every year right out back...away from hurting anyone or any pet....i feed her flys and bugs right outside our backdoor, and have gotten some cool pics of her as well!
Why did u kill her? you could of relocated her just as well as any spider!?
just use more care when catching her.
you said u like spiders.......hmmmm?
btw.no such thing as a blackwidow "nest"
as they are very solitary spiders
yea they are "poisonous" and deserve respect and caution for sure.
but serve a purpose just as any other spider

I don't think I'm the one that said 'nest'.

Sorry - my hands are not steady enough for me to maneuver the spider from her web to put the glass over either the wall or the floor. I did NOT want to take the chance of something going wrong. The last relocating I did, I didn't have the glass firmly press over the back of the notepad that I use. So, I had a spider getting antsy and wanting to move around, spinning itself an 'escape' thread. I'm not 100% fond of spiders to the point where I would feel comfortable with them crawling on me!

Given the fact that 99% of people posting here hate spiders, and only one other that does the relocating of spiders like I do, I think I do a pretty damn good job at respecting spiders.

A couple years ago, I brought in an orb weaver from outside - it was nearing winter and she was one of the 'late bloomer' orb weavers that can 'winter' herself if given the right conditions. Well, to make a long story short, I took her to our garage (attached to our house) and bought baby crickets regularly to feed her. It was amazing to watch her. this was in December that I brought her in from the cold. Around mid February, she up and disappeared - I'm thinking she probably went up in the rafters and made her way out of the garage during the Spring.

no you didnt say Nest someone else did
anyway...your right spiders are amazing creatures

I have an awesome picture of an orb weaver that i took in our backyard a couple years back. Actually, I use it as my avatar in a few forums I belong to.
