Surgery Scoliosis Pain Spinal fusion Back pain Physical therapy
I had surgery aged 8 and i had it in the uk Alder Hey Childrens Hospital x
I have had two spinal surgeries for my scoliosis. One when I was 4 and the other when I was 14, Both were through Scotish Rite in Dallas, Tx but performed at Dallas Childrens Hospital.
I had surgery when I was 7. Unfortunately, since I had so much growing left to do, it didn't work all that well as my curves are still quite large.
I had surgery at 6. I had four vertabre fused between my shoulder blades. My curve was at a 40 degree angle rather than the typical s curve. I had a rod wrapped with wire and screws since my spine at the time was too soft to hold the screws on its own. I had the rod removed at 25 because it was poking out and hurting me. I am now 34.
I had surgery when I was 17. I had spinal fusion surgery was in the hospital for two weeks lying flat on my back for most of my hospital stay. I had to wear a back brace fow a year and a half. Miss the last half of the school year. I don't have any issues except for occasional back pain if I sit too long.
my son was 5yrs old when he had surgery. He was curved at 65 degrees and now HAS a tumor, 13 screws and 2 rods. He is 9 years old and they are thinking he lower part of his back is curving and may be looking at another surgery in a few more years.

I had my first spinal fusion when I was 4 years old and in a body cast for 9 month in 1956. My second fusion was in 1960 at the at of 8 and in a body cast for six months. My third fusion at the age of 10 in 1962 and in a body cast for seven months. Then, at the age of 11 in 1963, I had a exploratory surgery. In March 2003, I had rods placed along my crooked spine and wore a back brace for several months. Along with the rods the doctor did fusions where the other fusions had gone bad. In November 2007, one of the rods broke due to fusions that had gone bad, so the doctor replaced the rod and did more fusions. I am currently having more severe back pain, leg pain, limping and walking with a cane. The doctors have done a variety of x-rays, CAT Scan and etc. A MRI can't be done because of the rods. The doctors have found nothing wrong. So, I am living with severe back pain taking pain medication and doing physical therapy. Some days the pain is worse than other days. There are days that I am just tired from the back pain. Some of the pain medication makes me light headed, (dizzy), don't feel like eating, tired and etc. Then, when I don't feel like eating, I get more tired, it is just like a circle. I tell my cat to make me something to eat, but he just looks at me (LOL). I have tried a variety of things, but nothing has help - epidermal injection. I had a myelogram which didn't find anything wrong. On the epidermal, the doctor had to go through my tail bone, because she couldn't find a place in my crooked spine. On the myelogram, I have never had anything hurt so bad in my life and then you had to lay flat for 24 hours afterwards except to get up and go to the restroom. I try to stay as active as I can, but some days are better than others. Since, I have a crooked spine, I am 4' 9 1/4" tall. Being "vertically challenged" has it good and bad points. At one time, I use to be 4'11" tall. They say as you get older, you get shorter. It makes my wonder how tall I will be when I get in my 60s (LOL).
My Daughter had her 1st of 2 surgery's related to scoliosis when she was 9. Then at age 16.
Her spine went from straight to 72 in 12 months.
Her spine was at a 72 degree curve when they operated and was put back to about a 22 degree being held by Harrington Rods and Screws It has remained stable at that. At 16 they reduced the size of her ribs because they kept growing when her back didn't.
