Hi, This is my first post. My dad has NF - I have never been diagnosed and I have 2 kids Daniel 9 Emma 7 which we have not mention much to them as yet which is the way I grew up I am now 41. I would like to do a few posts about alternative medicine if there are no objections.
First Up - Yin and Yang and the nervous system.
Where does Yin/Yang come from
In the west our calender in based more on the lunar cycles of the moon but in the east there calender in based more on solar cycles. To get the Yin/Yang symbol they place a stick in the ground and trace the pattern of the shadow over a year. http://www.chinesefortunecalendar.com/YinYang.htm
The Yin/Yang symbol is not just there religion it also is there science. They used it as a clock, compass,in there food and medicine from observations over hundreds of years. To be in good health they say your yin and yang needs to be in balance.
The equivalent to Yin/Yang from a western point of view is the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.
(See diagram bottom of page) http://parsonsdc.com/faq.aspx
If you know anything about acupuncture laws then it is not hard to work out the sympathetic side of the diagram is Yin and the parasympathetic side is yang.
A list of Yin/Yang Foods(the list might vary a little from place to place)

Back to my dad - My dad hates cucumber (yin food) it causes him to have small burps for a few minutes after eating it. If me and my dad where to drink enough beer to vomit I would throw up twice where my dad once he starts to throw up he would throw up for a few minutes (beer is also yin). He also likes spicy foods ( which are generally yang). Another thing I remember from my youth when my dad was working. He would often have kabana and chips for lunch. (Yan) It was a bit of a running joke at his office that others should start eating it for lunch cause he hardly got sick with colds or flues. Oranges (vitamin C) appear on the Yin side which is generally what people take when they start to get a cold.
My suspions are my dad has been/still is yang deficient since his youth with no idea if this is NF related. While diets can be from habits and environment I am wondering if the body is smarter than I give it credit for and seek out yang types foods to boost that side of the nervous system. A long with the side effects that type of diet (cholesterol) the body goes I am dam if I do and I am dam if I don't. He has also had a few operations but I will mention he has had his gallblader out.
I am curious if anybody else has a reaction to a yin type food or had there gallbladder out?
