I was diagnosed over two years ago with NS/MN - I have tiny vertical lines in my nails and they some of them are even raised slightly. From all I gather, it can be from the NS or it can be a side effect from the meds. My lines have gotten worse over the past three months while I have been on cytoxan and prednisone. I wouldn't worry about it over much - it seems to be a pretty common side effect of *something* - whether it's our meds or our condition.
I have had white lines on my nails as well. I think I had white horizontal lines. I showed them to one doc and he was not concerned. It was most certainly related to the nephrotic syndrome or prednisone.
The same thing happenend to my son his nails lifted and had lines in them one of them fell off and it grew back. The dr. told me it was a side affect from the steroids. She did give me a antibiotic cream to help with infection because it was summer and we all know how boys love dirt! good luck
I'm fairly certain they will be a sign of zinc deficiency which is something that the pred. can cause. When my son sees our paed. he checks his nails. You can increase zinc through diet. Too much calcium in the diet can impact on proper absorbtion of zinc (I too have noticed more white lines on my sons nails recently and he's been eating loads of yoghurt and cheese lately). Of course, calcium can also be depleted due to the pred. but needs to be balanced with Vit D. All very confusing! Zinc is an important nutrient for overall health and good immune function so I'd raise it with your doctor on the best course of action.
Yes, but in high doses Zinc is toxic, so it would be wise to closely monitor the dosage to make sure that we only take the appropriate amount. People who used Zicam to excess have lost their sense of smell and it is being recalled, so be careful.
It's actually really hard to eat too much zinc (and I wasn't talking about supplementing). What I did was find out the RDA for a child and then looked at the available food sources of zinc and how much of each foods would provide. Then went through what my son ate in a typical week and was able to work out if he was even hitting the RDA and he wasn't. But like I said above, talk to your doctor about it.
Nails are a sign of health. I too have deep vertical ridges in my nails. It is completely normal. It is caused by the kidney disease, whether or not youre in remission. I am in complete remission and I still have the ridges. I had the ridges at my worst too.
If you are concerned, you can talk to your dr. As far as I have learned, there is nothing to worry about. But you might just want to call to have some piece of mind.
