What to do if you see mild protein leak on stix?

My son Eric (2 yr old diag on 1/2008) is being tapered off pred -- currently 14cc every other day. Treatment was supposed to be 4 weeks at that dose -- well, after 2 weeks, I'm seeing a '30' on the stix (3rd square from the left -- not too clear on the reading).

At the neph's office last thursday, I was told it read 1+. Is that the same? anyways, my mother in law (caretaker while I'm on shift) measured it yesterday and told me it is showing 100 (4th square on the scale). I am scared he is relapsing!!

I emailed the neph, and she tells me not to worry since it can fluctuate and correct itself. She said not to up the pred dose yet, to keep the current dose for another 2 weeks like planned.... I'm still not sold on not taking further action to "stop" or lessen a potential full relapse.

I havnt had any experience with a relapse yet and I would like to know how you folks deal with a similar situation? I've read here where you measure the protein daily to "catch it early".. etc. but what do you do about it when it is caught early?

Also can you shed a bit of light on the 30, 1+, 100, etc..

Hi,

we have been dealing with this for 3 1/2 yrs (my daughter is now 6). don't worry too much at this point about a relapse. In fact, if he has MCNS but has responded to steroids, he will most likely relapse a few times the first year.

I can tell when my daughter is spillling by seeing bubbles/foam in her urine in the toilet. I dip her at that time. unless your doc says to do it every day, just do it every few days or 1/week if you are comfortable. otherwise , you can drive yourself crazy. believe me!

most people with MCNS (90%) will grow out of it. It is very scary (been there - and unfortunately we are in the other 10%) , but your odds are great that he will grow out of it .

also, my docs say that it is not a true relapse unless she is 2-3+ for a few days. at that point your doc would decide whether to pulse or not.
best of luck!

Hi i have lived with a son with mcns for 14 yrs dont worry until he has been 3+ for 3 days they prefer not to treat before hand and he will soon go back into remission. Unfortunately my son who is coming up 19 is the 10% but hes still fighting it and is now at uni.

Hi,

In our case my son never remitted on himself and we took prednisone to turn the relapse in an early stage to not have to do high doses. But he turned out be be a very frequent relapser that had to be on new medication.

well, he has measured 2+ for a day then 3+ for two more -- so I guess it is an 'official' relapse... We'll bump up the pred back to every day and start back on lasix till Thurs appt with the neph... what's next? I don't know for sure....
